failed smog

HC PPM at idle - 0123 measured
(0100max)

CO% at idle - 1.76
(1.00max)

Car is totally stock and has 115k miles.

Bad cat? O2 sensor?

help...

thanks

Redevvl 06-21-02 05:53 PM

I would suspect your CAT.

mjw 06-21-02 06:12 PM

I say go cheap and easy first, replace the plugs and the O2 sensor and retest. If your HC is still high then you know it is your cat.

make sure the rubber hose going from the airpump toward the engine is not ripped. i was barely failing at 2500rpm because of this. you might have a more serious tear. just guess.

Cossie 06-21-02 06:23 PM

plugs were replaced 2 weeks ago..Ivan is going to look at it this weekend..so..wish me luck

JeffShoots 06-21-02 08:37 PM

Huh, I should say that I'm a tuning expert in some areas And it's legal:D

Johnny 06-21-02 08:51 PM

dont forget.. to go on the highway and hit triple digits...get that cat all hot...it will work better

djantlive 06-22-02 11:04 AM

Isn't there a vac chamber that can be cleaned out that helps on smog tests? I read it on one of those popular rotary sites I think.

Yeah, definitely get the cat hot. You may want to run a bottle of those smog pass in a bottle cleaners from Kragen or Pepboys.

Yeah, I forget the name of it but it's black and located under the elbow attached the the throttle body. Disconnect it and blow it out with with compressed air.

Kinda realted will my 93 rx7 pass smog with no airpump apex PFC and cats still on. And a KKK stage one. Also does lowing the boost help with smog. Could i drop my boost to like 5 psi just spring and pass smog better than the usual 10-16? or Am i better higer cuz im burning more fuel or is this a stupid question. I think it might be. Cuz doesnt the boost not affect low RPMS
Thanks

i had a idea, this may be stupid but i cant really think or y. WHat if you disconnected your down pipe from the motor and let the gas run out the top. This might work to reduce smog. what you guys think.

You are right. that's stupid. They check pressure too. If you don't have enough pressure. They fail you too.

HAve them run your car again. I took my car in for emissions this past weekend, and the car failed on the first try, but passed with flying colors on the 2nd try. The guy told me that the computers that meassure the emissions tends to make mistakes often.
