Factory mazdaspeed a-spec version?
 

I just picked up a rhd fd that was imported to Canada years ago. It has the mazdaspeed a-spec bumper, had the mazdaspeed rear spoiler and had the mazdaspeed side skirts. The car is also factory competition yellow mica which is what most of the a-spec packages I've seen on google come like. I few red ones and silver but mostly yellow.

I was just wondering if a few of them came factory with this kit from the dealer or just something someone added later. I know the skyline gtr's that were the "nismo" edition had a vin tag that said it was a real nismo dealer package car. Anything like that for the fd?

The best place for you, is to head over to FDRX7.com, register and ask those guys.

They deal almost exclusively with RHD cars, and mostly Japanese. They have Gomez, who knows more info about this type of question than anyone I know. If you show them the VIN on the firewall, they will be able to run it and tell you exactly what you have, within hours.

Not to my understanding no, the only JDM (not Aussie SP's) FD's to get special VIN's and plate to go with it was the Spirit R's

MazdaSpeed parts to my knowledge were kinda like 'accessories' on today's vehicles, installed after by the dealer or another business...

Really doubt it's factory. These cars are 20yrs old, and have been modded.

it is an add on, the rhd FD did not come with these bumpers from mazda speed who ever had the car before has had the oem pieces replaced, however the bumper and side skirts you have on are fairly rare in my opinion so congrats on the purchase

What does being RHD have anything to do with it? Didn't most if not all of the real mazdaspeed parts come from japan anyway? And it being 20 years also has nothing to do with it, the bumper is probably as old as the car is.

The paint on the entire car is the factory cym, it's just faded. It's probably not a factory car that came like this. Someone must have added it later in it's life but coming from japan years ago like this(without the wrap) and being the factory color, someone must have spent a lot on a paint job, no over spray anywhere and the rest of the body that's not faded looks 100% factory.

I also believe its just had parts added onto it after it was purchased.
Isnt it hard to get over spray if your painting the parts the same colour as the rest of the car? :lol: i dont understand

I dont think anyone has spent mega bucks on it painting the bumper etc the same colour as the rest of the car while avoiding over spray of the same colour.
any paint shop can colour match pretty much anything, factory colour or not

It should be add on, just like OEM accessories.

yeah I figured the parts must have been added later. What I was talking about since the car is a hundred years old, they must have painted the bumper and skirts right after the car was purchased new.

This has never been painted since new, and you can get over spray even when painting the car and using the same paint code. You get over spray from shitty tape jobs, you see it because it's all frosty looking. Not talking really over spray in the color but the clear coat added later.

All the other a-spec bumpers I've seen on google you can see the color difference between the factory color and the bumper color. Mine you can't, so it had to have been added when it was fairly new to match the factory yellow that I guess fades super quick and is not a cheap paint to match, some sort of 3 stage paint.

That bumper is the "companion" bumper to the Mazdaspeed 15th Anniversary bumper that I currently have on my own car. IIRC, they were both produced very close together. My 15th Anniversary bumper was produced in 1993. The A-Spec bumper is of a similar time period.

If you ever remove that bumper, you will see a small rectangular decal glassed into the backside of the fiberglass. It will be a genuine Mazdaspeed decal, with manufacture number and date, as mine has, and all the Mazdaspeed bumpers should have, if they are original, which I believe yours is.

The bumper would be circa 1993-ish, and you say the car is a 1993 car. Most likely, given the parts and the year involved, the car would have been purchased new around 1993. The owner may have shortly then ordered the A-Spec bumper for the car, while the car was new and the bumper was dealer-available in Japan. The bumper would have been fitted up, and the whole package has then sun faded together for the next 20 years or so.

Looking at the rear hatch, you can see that the car started life with the version 1 rear spoiler (IE the very common rear spoiler) because the holes are there for it. But there is no fading to suggest the original spoiler was on the car for very long at all. There is a large shaded paint area and lots of drilled holes on the trunk lid that tells me the car has had a large ducktail rear spoiler fitted for most of its life. It would have been put on the car very early on, most likely when the front bumper and skirts went on.

Being a RHD car, I would make a guess it started off life as a Type-S (same as my car) or a Type-C. Does it have the faux suede/alcantara seats or the cloth seats? I cant tell very well, but if it has no rear wiper, odds are it would probably be a 1993 Type-S Japanese car.

If you have some interior photos, that may be of further help determining what sort of Japanese package it was. I'm betting it does/did have rear seats.

EDIT: I see the rear wiper setup now... :p

It did come with the big mazdaspeed rear spoiler, it was on the car before I bought it but he ended up selling it or cheaping it for his other fd project. This is the only pic right now I have of the interior, some cool floor matts though. It did come with rear seats and those suede seats but now the drivers seat is from a 94 or 95 for some reason. I think this even had the rz seats in it at one point.

It also looks like there's a lot more holes for the rear spoiler due to the leaves sitting on it. I think there's only 4 holes drilled for the spoiler.

I tried to ask nicely, because I assumed an FD is an FD, and it doesnt matter to me who owns it or where it is or where it came from, I will always do what I can for these cars.
