F u pilot bearing!!
Ok so i bought a bearing puller, and it ended up making my situation worse. Now i am curently chipping it out of the shaft.
I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on how i can speed up this process or make it easyer. |
Look up the toilet paper trick.
|
yeah i have read that one but the problem is, that the puller i used ended up pushing it back way far and got grease everywhere. I wish i would have herd about the toilet paper trick befor i started screwing with it.
|
I have the Mazda Specialty Tool and it works flawlessly every time. Doesn't help you much right now, but it may in the future.
|
for sure next time i will be buying one, sucks i have to drive two hours to a mazda dealer though.
|
Dremel and a punch. I had to do it last weekend. Just cut a line down it but just before you go all the way through stop and take a hammer and a punch and it should crack and take a pick or flat head and pry it out. You gota fool with it.
|
You'd be better off just mailing me your e-shaft and I'd do it for ya ;)
|
^lol. Yea it was a PITA to get it out i had a puller(engine was a orginal 88 turbo that sat for awhile) and ended up breaking the needle bearings and crap then i spent like an hour looking at it then i got out a roto zip and cut it and hit it with a screw driver and got it out. It took too long:icon_no2:
|
how did you cutt it with the dremal, im confused seems like you cant cutt down the length
|
Well if you have one of those carbide bits the one that kinda looks like a drill bit. I had a roto zip which is bigger so think a dremel would be better. Then just cut into it to make a slice down the middle. But if it is really far in there there are pencil drills or the pencil drill adaptor for the dremel.
|
well ill give it a shot
|
Just DONT cut into the E-shaft !
later |
i will try my best not to screw it up
|
mmmm.... This could get dangerous. Although unfortuneately I do not have any ideas for you at the moment.....

Why do it the easy way when you can do it the hard way. |
My engine was out of the car:)
|
When you get it out, run some emory cloth around in there to smooth the surface down.

i must not have got all the other bearing out because when i put in the new one the bearing did not spin. This is turning into a nightmear, i am going to pop that one out and try to figure out what the heck was still in there. I did not see anything before, obviosly it put extra preasure on the bearing not alowing it to spin properly.
I read something on pinapple racing, they have some jig that you cut the e shaft wider and insert a bigger pilot. I went to there site and didnt see the tool, my guess is it never really got used so they didnt produce them. well i hope i wont have to go that rout, now im going to go try to use the toilet paper method to get the new bearing out. If that doesnt work i am going to just buy the mazda tool. |
Is there any harm in coating the outside of the bearing in anti-seize before reinstallation?
|
Ok so i was pretty skeptical on the tp method, not anymore it worked like a charm! I dont even think i would buy the tool just cuz why would you when the tp method costs nuthing.
Well now that i got it out the inner race of the bearing was still seized like before so i am going to have to get a new bearing. |
how'd you do the tp method?
|
I found a bolt that was about the same size as the imput shaft, i added some electercal tape to make a tighter fit. then you just rip off some toilet paper dip in some water fill it full to the front of the bearing and hammer it in and keep adding tp as you go and it will pop right out.
I wish i would have herd about this method sooner i would be done with my clutch by now:icon_no2: |
Interesting, like a pseudo hydraulic press of sorts... Cool idea, I can definitely see it working as long as you get a nice tight seal around the bolt.

It is much better than the grease method cuz the grease will creap through any little crack. the toiletpaper doesnt need as tight of a seal.

Really? I would think the grease being more viscous would keep it from seeping out of the cracks better than something with less viscosity like water. Either way it obviously works pretty well with the water and TP. It doesn't really surprise me that it works, just kind of cool and I had never heard of it before.
--Rich (uses TP to wipe only bunghole, no rotary applications ) |
The Vmount looks pretty good from that pic, more pics!!
I know what you mean by having to do all of that with the car on jackstands, that is the way I did mine. Although I guess I got lucky b/c the puller I rented from advanced auto worked like a charm pulling that outa there. I never heard of the t.p. trick either. Very odd but hey if it works that is pretty sweet!! |
