Extremely High Oil Pressure
 

Just the other night the Oil Pressure gauge started climbing very very high. At idle it seems to be at mid-level (60) but once i hit about 3,000 RPM's the pressure is almost at MAX (120). What could this be an indication of? What problem/problems could I have? I think i was a little low on oil, and maybe a little dirty oil. So I changed the oil out yesterday and it still seems to be doing the same thing.

I have the same problem too. its one of three things,(1) the oil pressure sending unit, located under the oil filter is bad. (2) the ground wire is loose somewere. (3) the wire that clips on to the sending unit is faulty.

So I am not going to blow anything up? Or break anything?

Well its not good for the turbos. Did you overfill it? That would explain it.

No I didn't over fill it. It started before I changed the oil, and it was Low when it started.

My gauge does this all the time... Ive never over filled my oil. I always go by the book first and then the dipstick when i change mine. I use VR1 20w50 also so maybe that makes the sensor read diffently....

I've had the same patterns after putting in my reman engine just recently. That was with reusing all the pressure sensor and wiring from the previous engine which did not display pressures that high.

I started with 20-50 oil and mine displayed those very high pressures mainly when the engine oil was still not up to its full operating temperatures. Even with the temps fully up to normal, I'd still run 90 lbs pressures.

I changed to a 10-30 weight oil and that helped to bring those pressures down. Of course, that was in the middle of the CA winter when ambient temps were in 40s or 50s. With summer heat coming I may try some heavier oils again.

We used to shim our oil pumps in racing to give us higher oil pressures and used to run 100 - 110 lbs on the track with never a problem. While I do not care to see that much pressure on my street engine, it will probably not hurt you. Just be sure to not push the car until you're up to full oil temps. That usually takes quite a bit longer than getting up to full water temps. Just be patient with any car before revving them.

The stock gauge is not very accurate and the oil system pressure regulator is set for 110psi, so your readings are normal.

I run 50weight, my oil pressure is always super high. My engine's bearings always look nice and new though!

SOunds normal to me. I run Valovoline 20w 50 and to keep the pressure down when first starting the engine I drive at less than 3k till it's fully warmed up. The colder the temp, the longer it takes to remain at 60 above 3k.
