Exhaust and Intake modification questions
If I am going to install an after market exhaust and intake, will i need engine management also? Because I heard that if you did those modificiations, it would be safe to have the engine management. Because air/fuel flows will be different, therefore is this necessary or is it okie to just do the intake and exhaust without any engine managments? Thanks in advance. Any replies will help greatly. :bigthumb:

Not always w/ an aftermarket exhaust, but usually w/ the addition of an intake mod you'll be boosting over 10 PSI, and that necessitates a boost controller or EMS. Do you have a boost gauge installed?

The three mod rule has been disproven. The stock ECU runs rather rich. Given your fuel system is up to par (good injectors/clean fuel filter/strong pump), you should run into very little trouble. As long as you keep your boost @ 10PSI, you'll be fine. |
Thank you it helped alot. And no i dont have a boost guage, but i m gettin one install. What other guages are suggested to buy also? I rather get all of them instead of 1 by 1. Thanks

water temp, fuel pressure, stay away from air/fuel gauges, they aren't accurate enough with a narrow band (stock) O2 sensor

check out my sig running on stock ECU. no problems car runs great.

If you wnat to do the mods now, you don't have to install a boost gauge to check your boost. You can simply run a hose thru the passenger window to a hand held boost gauge in the car. Eventually, you should get a boost and water temp gauge.
Since you are in CA, you should consider modifying your stock airbox (rather than installing an aftermarket intake) to avoid hassles at smog time: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=121491 |
I agree with adam. I use his airbox mod and it works great. plus you fly under the radar with smog keeping the stock look. use adams kit with an HKS downpipe you will be fine.

Thanks Jeff :)

Here's a question along similar lines. Does a larger intercooler fit in with the 3 mod rule? I read that a larger intercooler helps prevent detonation? So would you still need to upgrade the ECU?

You should be just fine as long as you keep it under 10PSI. |
with an after market intake, it will bring hassel? I am not quite sure, because I am a noob to the FD world, and I love the car. At the same time, I want to make sure my car runs good, looks good and drives good =D. Thanks for the sharing of your invention. But I am a fancy guy, i always go for the best if possible, so if any of you have any recommendations, please let me know. At the same time, i hope that the mods i do wouldnt be much of a hassel to the CA smog/emission tests. And thanks alot for the precious info regarding the intake/exhaust issue. Thanks all xD
