Exhaust advice
So this last summer I put in a second hand RB Dual cat back, due to my stock muffler having a hole in it. I have an unknown brand aftermarket downpipe on it, that was hell to get lined up with the stock cat flange bolts, but I did get it and used graphite exhaust gaskets since the flanges didn't seem to fit flush with the stock thin gaskets. When I added the cat back my exhaust was so skewed that the exhaust tip was touching the rear diffuser and slightly melted it. I'm not sure if I have an older RB cat back or if there are knock offs out there, but there was no bolt holes on the muffler like the stock muffler has for the exhaust hanger, but the muffler actually has a hanger that is welded on. It also doesn't say racing beat anywhere on it, but looks identical to the dual tip system. It doesn't seem to fit very well and I couldn't straighten out my exhaust any other way than using some plumbers tape bolted to a support bracket to pull it away from my diffuser. This was intended to be a temporary fix since I was driving it almost 2000 miles in advance to moving to Phoenix. Does anyone have any advice on how to better stabilize my exhaust? Once it gets hot everything gets pretty loose and it hits against the bottom of the car, which as you can imagine gets annoying.

You probably have one of the cheapie Ebay downpipes that don't fit right and is cocking your exhaust at an odd angle. Proper way to fix it is to get a decent downpipe.

The welded rear hanger bracket on the muffler does not look up to RB's quality work. And if it doesn't say Racing Beat in laser etched letters on the outboard tip, it probably isn't.

The RB muffler has a bracket attached to it, which bolts to a second chassis-side bracket that is also provided with their exhaust kit. If that exhaust came secondhand, it's possible that a previous owner lost the RB bracket and fabbed something up to replace it (and by the looks of it, maybe didn't do the best job).

Yes that is a RB exhaust. Older style with no etching. I have the same one and refinished it. He is correct. The hanger bracket broke off or something and they welded a hanger on. Hard to tell what part of your system is causing the misalignment.

I had read somewhere that the early systems were a bit primitive, but I wasn't sure about that exhaust hanger. I don't see any evidence that there was ever the bracket where the stock hanger bolts on like on the other systems I've seen. Do you think that an exhaust shop would be able to weld the correct mount on it and perhaps straighten it out? By the way I like the ceramic coated system. I've considered doing that. |
