Turn it upside down and shake it!
Actually, it's probably the most straight-forward yanking job out there ... |
i dont know how many times i have to tell you this..dont worry. just keep your car at jims while you rebuild. i will ask permission for you first, and it will be blocked in by many other cars for your peace of mind. help will be there. it is not brain surgery, come on len.... you can trust me on this. everything you need will be right there. hoists, porting templates, everything you need. actualy, sept. 1st is the same day i am dropping in the new motor for the rx2 and there is a 91 getting a motor pulled that day. i will even let you use "my" saturday side of the bays. god damn, i am working 76hrs this week.

Just start taring shit apart. Thats the easy way. I'm a helo mechanic and thats always the preferred method. Besides if it all comes down to it, pay someone to put it back together. Give them the headache

Engine Out.
Follow the manual - it is very good with the following exceptions.
Don't remove the transmission. Do the release clutch deal - very simple, almost magical - make sure you pry on the correct thing - the wedge collar. To give yourself front room - undue the crossbar that the AC pipes go along on the left side and pull it forward on that side. Jack up the transmission as you lift the engine until no more is possible - don't force. you will have to pull quite hard to get the motor mount bolts over the dish edge - you will see what I mean. And like magic - out it comes. Again study the book - the hard parts are the cable harness from under the ABS and the exhhaust manifold (Precat - don't put it back on - go for a down pipe) Remove the Airbox and Intercoller completely and bend back the Rad. hoses towards the front. The fun part is getting it back in - it is tricky but remember the motor mount bolts must be forced into their cups before you can align the transmission and clutch - patience is a virtue. Good Luck - it isn't that bad but an RX2 or 3 is a lot easier! :) |
I disagree about the tranny staying in the car. I've pulled my engine once with the tranny in place and once without and I can say that it was a lot easier and safier without the tranny in place. It is very easy to damage the wedge collar or p plate ring when hoisting the engine, and you'll have a hard time getting the motor mount studs to clear the subframe. I say drop the tranny and you'll have one less thing to worry about. Plus it only takes 30min.

so i should pull the engine and trans in 1 shot???
or drop the trans and then pull the engine? hey kieth i think im gonna u-haul it to jims and back b/c theres a few things im gonna be doin to her over the winter..(jim lab busings--kazz, and lots of degreasing).no sense lettin it sit outside untouched for 7months... |
I have done it 3 times now and have always like leaving the tranny on the engine and pulling it all out at once, it keeps better balance that way. You have one person up under the car to pull down on the tranny while 1 or 2 on top cranks it up and pulls the whole thing away from the front. Seem to work real well and this is how they did it at the factory..:)

I want to see someone pull there engine, need information, need to learn. Hell im gonna have to do it someday:)
|
im workin oin getin a vid camera to document the process...if not ill prob buy a dig camera and snap alot of pics...
or u can come to jersey on spet 1st.... |
I just pulled mine and I left the tranny on. I just went slow so I discovered all the things I did not disconnect. I left the wiring harness on, I disconnected it from the ECU and pulled the whole bunch out through the firewall, sure took a big tug though. I'm mostly worried about putting it all back together...

Add me to the list of people pulling their engines. I just bought this 94 RX-7 last Friday with a blown motor for 6K. I began at once replacing the engine at once. We will have to swap some stories. My biggest problem right now has been getting the exhaust shield's off of the exhaust manifold. I have them unbolted I just can't get them out of the engine bay. Anyway I broke out the old digital camera and uploaded a bunch of pictures to my web address at geocities
http://www.geocities.com/m_snoby Your welcome to look at any of the pictures that you want. Most of them are for me so I know how things go back together. At the bottom of the page there are some named pictures you might be interested in. http://www.geocities.com/m_snoby/100..._off_truck.jpg http://www.geocities.com/m_snoby/100..._side_view.jpg Later guys! |
why u botherin with pullin the turbos while in the car...u can pull the engine with them and all acessories on..all u need to disconect is the dp ecu..fuel lines... and colant and oil line...pull her out and strip it to the block while u can have easy acess to everything...
|
Gee wiz in less than 12 hours the rx7 forum has pulled down over 3 gigs of bandwidth from geocities... Oh well I will have to put them up on my own server at home...
The reason that Iwas disconnecting the exhaust shields was, I am trying to figure out how to disconnect the first cat. |
u mean the down pipe aka pre cat....theres 4 14mm studs where it meets the turbos...remove the intake , rear tuerbo inlet pipe, then remove the y-pipe..u have acess to all studs..ill see if i can find a pic, if not the worksop manual (wich u can download) shoes the pics...
