engine removal
 

hey guys
i was wondering if anyone pulled out the engine from underneath. (with the cross-member)

i think looks easier.
what do u people think?

It's very possible. If you have access to a lift, and plan on removing the tranny, this is actually not a bad idea.

I usually do it the old fashioned way, which is rather time consuming and a bear of a task, especially on jack stands.

Probably possible and you're right it's probably easier, you'll just have to watch out that all the crap on the back of the engine doesn't rub against the firewall.

You may also have to remove some of the accessories on the front of the engine to get it to fit past the core support.

Porsche guys do this all the time though, just use a hoist to keep the engine in place then jack up / lift the car on a lift then slide the engine and tranny away.

I dropped the engine under when I removed my engine and I must admit it was a piece of cake. I initially tried to do it the normal way but one of the heater hoses just kept getting caught and so a few jack stand later, I dropped the subframe and down she went.

i have access to a lift etc etc..
my fucking engine overboosted and broke on just 10 600kms :(

Has anyone else tried it both ways and do you have a preference? I don't have a lift so how high above the ground would you have to get the car.

Dont drop the subframe, I cant see it saving you more than 20 minutes tops if you plan to leave the tranny in. Even when removing the tranny I couldnt justify it, aligment could become and issue and no need to add to the work load. I used to prefer pulling the tranny but nowadays I leave the tranny in the car unless it needs the 5th gear sycnro rebuilt.

It took a friend and I 2.5 hours to pull his motor last monday night. I don't think removing the subframe and lowering it out of the car would save you time, and then you have to separate the motor and trans after its out. Much easier to leave all that stuff in the car and not worry about taking it out and the further tear down afterwards.

I doubt you are going to save any time as the easy part is getting the engine out. It might make things easier during the reinstall if you go from the bottom though.

I've pulled the engine out of the bottom on wrecked cars but it is more work. Remember the suspension and steering rack have to come out, then if you want to roll the car around you'll need to put the subframe and rack back in.

i pulled my engine from above last weekend and it was a cakewalk. the only issue i had was i forgot to release the throwout bearing from the tranny and i was stumped for a few hours on why the tranny wouldn't separate from the engine. make sure u release it before u pull it apart LoL
