Engine prob FD

Hey all,
lets see how can i explain this... to start off i was driving my FD around for lets ay 10 mins at slow speeds and by the time i got home i poped the hood and there was smoke comming out of the engine. I also notice that when i was in neutral if i reved it to 2000rpm it would back fire 2-3 times then rev down to about 300 and then go back to reving normail at 800. I have no clue what might have caused this, the only thing i done to it that day was get a coolant flush, oil change and tranny fluid change and i somehow doubt that could be the prob. Any ideas to whats going on? Hopefully a rebuilt isnt the only solution.
Any suggestions would help

Ben

Can you please be a bit more descriptive? What color was the smoke coming out of the engine? Where was it coming from? Why did you pop your hood, did the temperature gauge show the car was overheating?

It's pretty common to have air bubbles in the cooling system after a flush & refill. Check your coolant level when it's cold, and add water if necessary.

Also check the MAP sensor. It's a sensor on the drivers' side of the engine bay, near the brake reservoir. It's about 1-2" square, with one vacuum line connecting to it, and a couple wires connecting on the other side. It will be labeled "vacuum sensor" or something like that.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply,
The smoke was greyish i have a picture of my engine showing where about the smoke was comming from. The guage didnt show any sign of overheating not even close. I popped the hood because i was wondering why it was backfiring and it was reving so low then back to normal when i reved it. Obviously i didnt notice anything other then the smoke. I cant even guess to what it could be.
What do you mean by check the map sensor? how do i do this?
Ill be perfectly honest i know very little about cars and this is my first car so im pretty limited to understanding some concepts or things that i should do.

What did the smoke smell like? did you spill any oil or coolant onto the car. This will typically cause the car to smoke when the substance is burned off the car.

Not sure why your idles are off. If the car was ok before you changed oil, coolant, & trans fluid, you probably did something to it for it to run strange.

Also, make sure your coolant system is burped down and your oil/tranny fluid is full.

One time I knocked off my map sensor hose while changing the oil filter, couldn't figure out why an oil change would cause my car to run like crap, then I saw the map sensor and was like, doh...

The first thing you should treat yourself (and your REX) to is a shop manual! It'll save you by explaining where many of the items you'll ask about are located. And, perhaps it'll help you identify and correct potential problems that haven't surfaced yet.

Your map-sensor is a small, rectangular, black plastic-looking shape that's bolted to the fire wall, on the drivers - side of you car. From the drivers side fender, if you were to lean into the engine compartment and place your right hand on the black-plastic grill work under the wind-shield-wipe arm, you'd almost be touching it. Check to see if the small vacuum hose that goes from it to the rear of your upper - intake - manifold is still in place.

If you have a digital cam... or know a friend who has one, try taking a few shots of the problem and post here on the formum.

Next time, it would be helpful if you give a little more history on the car like mileage, condition, stock ECU or after market, other electrical (related) problems... that sorta thing.

Usually, when an engines idle starts to hunt before settling to a constant, that can indicate any of several problems. One that comes to mind is a vacuum leak.... PCV valve, plug &/or bad plug wires or wire not seated.... I could go on... you get the idea..

Does the "check engine light" come on? I had the map sensor (aka boost sensor) vaccume line fall off on me and i had similar symptoms, but it also threw code. If you just had your fluids changed it would be my guess that a little got on the motor and thats the smoke you are seeing. If it is a vaccume leak, you can usually hear it when the car is running. It will sound like an out of place hisssing noise.

Congrats on this being your first car. I have been working on cars for many years and this is by far the funnest car i have ever owned, however its also one of the most challenging to work on. If you know nothing about cars i would suggest you start learning.

Funnest? this car has extracted a lot of blood, sweat and tears from me. (not to mention $$$)

OOPS, I just realized that maybe you're trying not to scare him :bigthumb:

ok ill check the map sensor
It looks like my pic is too big so ill just put a link...http://spaces.msn.com/members/benvprov/PersonalSpace.aspx?_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaHandler=TWlj cm9zb2Z0LlNwYWNlcy5XZWIuUGFydHMuUGhvdG9BbGJ1bS5FZG l0TW9kZUNvbnRyb2xsZXI%24&_c11_PhotoAlbum_albumid=c ns!1phh7XvQeg5KohZTns7NpFsg!105&_c11_PhotoAlbum_sp aReturnToFull=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaProcess=1&_c=Ph otoAlbum&_c02_owner=1
yeah theres one in there with a circled red area on the engine, thats where the smoke was comming from. As far as information on it goes...its a 94 with 100 000 miles on it. The body and such is in mint but as far as the engine goes i have no clue. I just put in a new cluth and fly wheel 2000 miles ago. Electrical everything seems to be fine from what i can tell but once again im not expert. I did have the fog lights rewired so that they would turn on as u turn the car on but that shouldnt of affected anything. It doesnt have the stock intercooler as u can tell from the picture, it has full exhaust done, boost guage, turbo timer and i belivev the rest to be stock.
Thanks for all the info...now to go check the map sensor

That link to your picture comes up with an error message: "The space you are trying to view may not exist or access to it may be restricted." Do you have a 'public album' or something similar that you can share?
