Engine Fires/Fuel filter relocation...??
 

Those with ENGINE fires on the FD..

Did you or NOT have the fuel filter relocated
into the engine bay????

I am considering relocating my fuel filter. Just
wondering if that can be a cause of engine fires,
other than leaky injectors and rails..

I've had mine in the engine bay for several years now....it's the old K&N washable/reusable

the only incident was one time I didn't have the teflon o-ring installed correctly and it was pissing gas all over driver's side of the engine (good thing it wasn't the turbo side!)...that was a bit of a hairy moment, I had been driving for about 15 mins before I smelled gas, pulled over and took the filter apart and re-installed the o-ring (no tools required) then kept driving

btw I can clean the filter now in about 3-5 minutes.....there is no way I would ever go back to the old location!! I clean it about every 3k and there is always crap in it

it's usually the pulsation dampner, rather a fuel filter leak, which is the cause of the fires http://www.rx7.com/store/rx7/fdfuel.html

For how often the fuel filter needs to be replaced and considering the lack of room in a FD engine bay and the LIKELY less than factory installation it is a better idea to leave it in the stock location.

The percentage of cars with fires in the engine bay that have had fires is probably much, much higher than the percentage of cars that have had fires without the fuel filter relocated.

The reason I say this is because very few FDs have relocated filters, say 100 of them. If 10 had engine fires then your looking at a 10% chance of an engine fire.

The entire FD population (in US) is 13,500 or so. If 10% of those cars had engine fires then you'd be looking at 1350 cars. That would be 1 per day for almost 4 yrs!

Typically engine fires are due to leaky primary injectors or the pulsation damper.

Relocate a filter on the back of the rear subframe . My mechanic does it and can change the under ten dollar filter in about three minutes . Alot of room and no chance of engine fire from the filter .

subframe would be GREAT.. Not quite sure,
where on the subframe you are refering to
