what would cause all 3 apex seals to compress into the front rotor slots? there is very little carbon on the rotor face. i have not taken apart the motor as yet, when viewed from the exhaust ports, it seems that the rotor smacked into something and pinched all 3 apex seals in their grooves. i have had nothing but good luck so far with this motor. had it since 1998, bone stock mazda reman. car was tuned in 2008 and was making 380 hp @ 15 psi on pump gas. i leaned out, heard some pinging and drove her home on 1 rotor. good thing is there is no damage done to the turbo.

You know where to get a replacement :)

yes sir, but i need to sort out the issues first. double checking resistance on coils, fuel pump resistor, cleaning and flow testings injectors etc.

The "something" that the rotor smacked into is most likely a chuck of apex seal.

You need to remove the turbine housing from the turbo to determine that there is not any damage.

What makes you believe they are crushed into the slots?

Take apart the engine, then start a thread. Not a fan of guessing games ;)

wonder if when you leaned it out caused one of the seals to break a little chuck off which ended up causing this whole issue and could also be the piece that the rotor hit but its still strange anything on the housing?

DaleClark Jan 4, 2012 05:03 PM

It's impossible to really see anything through the exhaust ports. You won't know for sure until you break the motor open.

It's gotta get cracked open anyhow :). It ain't fixin' itself.

I agree with Banzai. My stock twins from my blown motor look great with the exhaust housings on.....couldn't see the damage until I removed the exhaust housing(s).

wonder if detonation could cause the rotor tips to get hot and melt in...

unvmyrx7 Jan 7, 2012 09:59 AM

alright guys and girls, i did ran lean, a chunk of apex seal got wedge and between the rotor housing and rotor, pinching the rotor groove.

what i also found was the oil pan coating was peeling internally and clogging the oil pick up strainer. i re sealed the pan a few years back and the was no peeling paint. and no it was not extra silicone. the oil pressure regulator spring was also broken in half

^^I'd like to see a picture of that last one.
