Does anyine know what the EL unit does?
I did a search and only found 1 hit.

I have been chasing a rich condition for some time now and noticed that, no matter what I do, I don't get a CEL. I know it works because it flashes when I start the car. I have been tracing the wiring diagram and found that all the diagonostics go through the EL unit. Thus, maybe it is causing some problems.
BTW, I have changed out the ECU twice.
Any help would be appriciated, thanx.

Look on page F-135 of the FSM. It increases idle when any one of these conditions are met:
blower on 3rd or 4th position
Water thermosensor on
rear defrost on
headlight on

I think that's all of them. I just read that section earlier today :)

ISUposs, thanks, I didn't even know that it was part of the fuel syst. section. I kind of understand now what it does but I still can't tell what it is or where. Is it that little black box that is attached to the back of the ECU? If I know what it is then I can test it.

Yes it is the little black box on the backside of the ECU. It is designed to sense current flow from any of the inputs ISUposs listed, though to be more specific, it will bump up the idle when parking lights are turned on, i.e. when the lights are turned to the first clicked position on the stalk. It continues to keep the idle raised when the pop-ups are on. The idle is supposed to rise from 750 rpm to 850 rpm when the EL unit senses one of those conditions, and the rise is caused by a small opening of the idle speed control valve on the side of the throttle body. My car does EXACTLY this rise when I engage one of these components, with a commensurate slight loss of vacuum (about 1.5 - 2 lbs of vacuum).

Ahhh.. gotta nitpick. It's the water thermoswitch, not sensor. This is the lower connector on the backside of the water pump housing, behind the thermostat location. It has a black connector with a single wire running to it.

Can't think of why this would cause a rich condition, though. It only effects a small change in airflow, if anything leaning the motor out at idle. It has no effect at anything other than idle.

el unit:electrical load unit
it raises the idle for such things as : a/c blower, headlights etc

I guess I'll keep looking. There must be a problem with diagnostic connector or wiring. I've got to figure out why I don't get any codes even though my car runs like crap.

compression? ignition? vac leaks? how do you know it is rich? is the air pump functioning and pluged in?

I know I did not give a complete history of what I have done but it would take pages to describe everything.
The compression is a little low (90-95psi) but I have not checked it in awhile. I did not think that the compression could cause a rich condition?
I replaced all the vac. lines with Hose Tech. silicone hoses. I have checked for leaks with no luck.
I know it's rich because I have a Haltech A/F meter and its pegged out when I drive the car. And the exhaust is strong enough to take your breath away.
As far as the air pump, I have disconnected it, removed it, and installed block off plates in all necessary locations. I have eliminated the ACV and all related solenoids. Even installed a restistor in all empty plugs.
I have also tried 3 different ECUs.
I'm no rotary expert, but I am learning, and someday I'll find my problem. In the meantime, any help is welcome.
