EGT probe on downpipe exact location
1 Attachment(s)
I will be tapping my Jspec 96 downpipe later today and then dropping the engine with the downpipe attached. I wanted to know exactly where should I tap so that when I drop it it I have enough clearance. Because with my luck this thing is gonna be banging on something it should not. I attached a pic of what my setup will be looking like after the install. Any pics of downpipes withteh correct tap would be helpfull

Do a quick search on here. There are many discussions on the validity of the EGT probe being located in the dp. The reputable studies and found that it is fairly worthless. The location you want to mount it is within the manifold BEFORE the turbos. It is tricky on the stock manifold but I am pretty sure it has been done and there are pics somewhere on here.
If that is the stock dp with included cat I would invest in an aftermarket unit... |
EGT should go in the manifold post turbo right before the downpipe flange.
edit: hmm i heard it should go post turbo but oo7arkman says pre turbo  |

There you go. Force13B.. The manifold is between the engine and turbos... Post turbo there is only DP, no manifold... |
If you place it post turbo you have no idea how much heat the turbo is soaking up therefore you have no idea what your real EGTs are. So post turbo isn't accurate.

I went ahead and stuck the EGT in the downpipe, my take on this is that even if I do not get the exact reading, the temps are all relative and for that reason even with the probe in the downpipe I can tell when it is hottest , either way this is mostly for show, I just wan t the car running.

It is not that the temps may just be multiplied by a factor or added "x" temp to equal the correct temp, there are too many factors soaking/diverting heat. It is that the EGT's are basically useless when taken from the dp location. I guess if you are just wanting another cool flashing gauge in the cabin, that is cool, but don't let anyone tune off of that sensor...
