Egr

Normally you test the operation by removing the vacuum line and cracking the throttle open about 1/5 or so in neutral not real slow but not too quick. There should be a short bout of vacuum on the line. If there is vacuum there you need to verify the potential of the egr itself its operation on two fronts. One, does the valve move up and does it seem to let in the exhaust gas as it should. The easiest way is to find a vacuum line on the engine which has vacuum any time the engine is running at idle. Take this vacuum and apply it to the EGR valve. If the valve is working and the passages it feeds are clear normally the engine rpm will become a bit unstable. It seems like a lot of info but testing it only takes a few minutes if you know what your doing. John PS the egr is designed to cool down the combustion as to prevent Nox, but most of all for a FD its there to help prevent "" PING"" and we don't want that.

if you have a 94 fd you'll get a check engine light if it's bad.

You will get a check light if the electric switch part is bad . The valve part can be cut off and the computer will not know .
