efini y pipe considered a power mod?

Ok so Ive heard that the efini Y pipe affects flow from the turbos.I already have a intake and catback and next on my list is a downpipe and greddy underdrive pulleys plus removing the airpump.I was also looking at getting a Efini y pipe to improve reliability and also reducing the number of weakpoints in the flow path. Can I run a efini y pipe and of course the catback, intake, and downpipe on the stock ecu without problems?

You should have no problems as long as you keep the boost down to stock levels. What boost controller do you use?

MakoRacing 04-11-04 04:12 AM

You should be ok, just promise us that you wont put on a midpipe without a PFC or some other ecu.

Flybye 04-11-04 10:13 AM

I had major problems to the point I was spiking to almost 14psi

That's when I asked myself....should I put a valve on the WG or buy the PFC. Hmm....... :D

I didn't notice any difference in output or response when I added the Effini "Y" pipe. I already had the PFS PMC on the car. It was nice to get rid of more plastic plumbing and rubber hoses. (Now I have the Apex'i PFC).

I don't think it's a big enough change to cause problems by itself. It is really only a small flow improvement.

I put on the Efini Y pipe to cure a cronic boost leak. It worked great. As far as performance goes I don't know how much difference it made because of said boost leak.

well guys.I dont have aboost controller right now.So that why I was a little worried.I wasnt quite sure if the efini y pipe was that much of a power mod as more of a reliability mod.Ill see how things are with just the downpipe. If I get any spiking with the downpipe only then Im going to get a boost controller before I make any other mods.

why would it be considered a reliability mod... the 93-95 y pipes dont break or cause overheating.. the efini y pipe just flows better for more power... so yes. i would consider it a power mod... now would it be something you would notice right off the bat.. prolly not. but still.. dont push it.. waiting to install a part vs spending money on a new motor.... you weigh those options.

From what I have heard about it it will increase you boost preasure.

Get a home depot boost controller until you can afford a better one.

My situation made it a reliability mod because I kept getting a leak at the small hose that connects the Y pipe to the elbow that goes to the intercooler. The hose would just keep slipping off the y pipe. Since the Efini Y pipe bolts to the elbow that can no longer happen. Not so much reliability from motor breakage just normal running reliablilty.

My boost increased 1psi after y-pipe installation. Be carefull.

you shouldnt remove the air pump until you have a mid pipe on there. if you do, it can cause your cat to go out. do you have to have emissions where you live? if so, taking off your airpump will most likely cause your car to fail. also dont get a mid pipe until you get an ecu. your next mod should be a dp, then mabie the y-pipe.

Like cruiser, I too, picked up anouther 1lb of boost. It also seemed to hold boost to redline better. CJ

At one point i had intake, catback, and down pipe...I got very large boost spikes like flybye...no good

The JSpec99 Y-Pipe/Crossover Tube might enhance flow, but you're not gonna create a monster boost problem simply by just installing it. It's more of a reliability mod.

technonovice 04-11-04 09:54 PM

The y-pipe mod is more about volumetric efficiency than increasing boost. You can have greater boost with restrictive flow that will flow less air than a less restrictive set up under less boost. You would be better of getting an ecu and dp first and then do some wideband tuning.

Not sure if I understand you on this. The Ciriani site, as well as two people on this thread are suggesting/reporting 1 psi (approx. 10%) increase in boost.

I'm not about to get into a pissing match on this one, BUT,...the reported gain may have come because the "old" y-pipe actually had a small leak at the coupler ??
