ECU question for you guys

I was planning on getting a 3rd gen as my next car and there is nothing that can change my mind. Anyway I heard from someone that has a 93 that once you put on an ECU, your gas mileage goes to $h!t. He has other mods on his car as well but he put a petite unlimited ECU on and he said that he gets like 10 miles per gallon is this normal:confused:. I know the car is supose to average between 17 and 19 when its stock but 10 sounds a little harsh.

ECU and gas mileage

Ryan- The FD already has an ECU. What you are referring to is an add-on, or piggyback ECU or some type of additional microprocessor control for the engine functions. How you tune the new ECU and the way you drive will determine your gas mileage. I have a "piggyback" ECU from PFS. If I don't get real heavy with my right foot, the gas mileage is still 17-18 mpg. Some of the fuel maps actually *remove* fuel from the air-fuel mixture to give better performance at specific rpms. Since you have already convinced yourself that you will get an FD, have fun and don't worry about your gas bill. That will be the least of your problems.

I find that short trips guzzle gas regaurdless if you go heavy on the throttle, say i keep doing 8km runs then shut off and start i only get about 280km's per 60 litres... but i'd get about 400 if i take longer trips like 20-30 kms

in case u don't know conversions its 4 L per gallon, an 1.6km per mile

It seemed like when I last drove my '93 it was only getting like 12mpg, but maybe it just seemed that way. It was on a stock ecu and only had intake and exhaust as mods. But I think you should still get pretty good mpg on the highway as long as you keep your right foot out of it...
