Dyno'd my 93 Today

Here's the run down on my car.

original/stock motor, turbos, injectors, and clutch
74xxx miles on the car
Apexi intake/exhaust/BOV, rx7store downpipe/midpipe, Unorthodox main pulley, Supra OEM fuel pump, Greddy 2 Row FMIC, HKS spark plugs, Magnecor wires, HyperGround wires, Profec B boost controller, Apexi PFC w/ dataloggit. then some reliability mods.

329.5 hp.
274.1 tq.

this was after a good hour on the dyno. I do have an ACT clutch and flywheel that i will be installing shortly, then i might go back and do 1 pull when the car is cool and see what i can get.

Now, the bad. On the drive home my car seems to have developed a little "hiccup/miss/hesitation" type thing. When i'm on the hiway it will suddenly slow down for a second then be normal. In town it seems to do it when i let off the gas, it will pop like a backfire a couple times then it will have no power for a second. and if i stop the rpms will drop so low that the car dies. It started up right away both times this happened but it kind of worries me.
Is it my engine telling me it's about to go??
Thanks.

ps. i have the dyno sheet but, it says the file is too big and i don't know how to shrink it so if somebody wants i can send it to them so they can resize it and post it for me.;)

ReDHot7 05-13-03 08:07 PM

oh yeah the duty cycle on the stock injectors was at 91% so that's why we stopped tuning it. and didn't turn the boost up.

Mr rx-7 tt 05-13-03 08:26 PM

I have seen 363 rwhp on stock injectors..Get a supra tt fuel pump also.

Judge Ito 05-13-03 08:40 PM

how is the vacuum needle on your boost gauge? is it slightly moving back and forth when the engine is at idle? if it is you might have a cracked apex seal. When the apex seal cracks or the tip of the apex seal breaks off you get this type of symptom. If you have a steady vacumm reading then you might have some really fouled spark plugs.. If you can, try to use and aftermarket vacuum gauge that is more sensitive then the average aftermarket boost gauge.

Judge Ito 05-13-03 08:49 PM

by the way congrats, pretty decent numbers on a stock engine with stock turbos..

I do have the Supra OEM fuel pump.

Thanks Judge Ito. I'll check out the vacuum in the morning. I know before i went down there today that it was always steady. I have a DEFI boost gauge. I sure hope it's just the spark plugs. It was running pretty pig rich before i brought it down there.

rerx7 05-13-03 09:13 PM

363rwhp that's very good numbers, did you use the profecB to turn up the boost? As when I went to dyno my FD having almost the same mods as you without the Supra fuel pump and the profecB, I dynoed close to 280rwhp. That's a big difference, as I have the mods listed below. I am on orginal engine, turbo and injectors as well.

Cool, now hit the track and see what she does.

ReDHot7 05-13-03 09:21 PM

I wasn't the one with 363 hp mine was 329.5. actually, the boost controller was turned all the way down. the car ran about 10 psi on the first turbo and then as the second one came on it creeped up to about 12 psi. I think that's from the midpipe (no cat).

I can't wait to get it to the track and shut up all the DSM guys around here. I need to get some Nitto 555r's first :)

DaedelGT 05-13-03 09:31 PM

You were getting 330HP at 12PSI? That sounds pretty good.

rerx7 05-13-03 09:31 PM

oh sorry my mistake, but still 329.5 is very good better than mine at least, I am running a straight pipe also, down pipe, mid-pipe and a cat back. I am using the HKS F-Con thinking of getting the Apexi PFC. Since I didn't have a boost control my boost went to abit over 15lbs at boost spike.

well i went out and check the vacuum at idle just a bit ago. It looks to be pretty steady, on my Defi boost gauge it looked to be around 17.5 psi and on the Commander for the PFC it was almost always between -455 and -460 mmHg. Then i took it for a short little drive and came back, the idle was a tad bit higher than when i left but the vacuum stayed about the same and seemed steady. So hopefully it is just fouled plugs. Which i ordered today :)

329.5 rwhp at 10psi creeping to 12 psi...that seems like very high hp to me...are those corrected numbers?
It took my car 14psi and several dyno runs/tuning to make that much power.
At 12psi people usually only get 300-315.

time to get some 1300cc inj. I love seeing low injector duties now that i upgraded.

Oh yeah...what afr are u running? Perhaps you are making so much power cause u are running on the lean side as opposed to those of us making less power but having low 11s afr..nice and safe.

really...wow!
At 300rwhp with an 11.2 afr i was seeing 90% duty cycles. I know some people say the stock fuel system is good for 350 rwhp....but i dont.

Is your waste gate ported? seems like you should be seeing more creep with stock turbos and wastegate...I have been a bit leary about adding the MP for that reason.

bro...get the MP. I love mine.
I have no issues what so ever with creep...none!

sounds silly but i remeber someone doing alittle researching and finding that mostly only the 93's have creep with the mp. I know there really isnt much difference between the yrs but it is what it is.
Why do only some people get creep? some people say its the cb, but i have ran both the rb dual and the appxi n1 dual with no creep. i dunno.

Narfle 05-15-03 11:31 PM

i am very interested in creep vs midpipe vs year
please continue

Its not going to make any bit of difference if you get a boost controller. The midpipe is opening up your exhaust to much and the wastegate cant dump enough (it isn't big enough) and don't waste your time getting it milled out bigger. It wont change a thing. I have seen four people with this problem (myself also) the only way to leviate this is to get a high flow cat.

Based off of that info, your motor is good to go. Also, I've heard some bad things about the HKS spark plugs. I've run NGK 10.5s, 11s, and 11.5s with great results.

ReDHot7 05-16-03 06:33 AM

no my wastegate is not ported.
no those are not corrected numbers, straight from the dyno sheet.
My A/F is 11.9 at 5k rpms and creeps to 11.4 at 7k rpms.
i just ordered some NGKs :)

You need an IC and you'll be over 300 easy... I put 313 at the wheels on a dyna pak chassis dyno with similar mods (dp,cb,intake, smic, pfs purple, 13-14 psi) a stock cat and 15,000 mile plugs...

Damn I need a hi-flow and a fuel pump...should be able to hit 330....
