Dual Oil Cooler Referb
 

Today I sent out an ebay set of dual oil coolers for referb. I sent them to American Cooler Services (www.americancooler.us) via UPS. Can't wait to see first hand results from this company after reading all the great posts on here.

How much does the refurb cost if you dont mind letting us know? I have my dual coolers out now, was thinking of sending them myself.

They quoted me roughly $125 per cooler but the cost can vary; if you get the thermal coating that's extra.

When I contacted them to place the order, they recommended shipping the items with a letter describing what you need done. You give them a phone number and mailing address so when they receive and inspect the coolers the cost is then determined along with return shipping arrangements.

I got mine done a couple of years ago and I was happy with the end result. There is an old thread here somewhere with some more info, the only thing was that mine came back with an anodized coating(yellow like) compared to some of the guys having a black coating put on theirs. When I spoke to them about it they told me that they didn't do the black(thermal) coatings , something you might want to get clarification on first. Hope it helps.

WTF happened to them? Looks like someone purposefully bent every fin on it!

My single stock oil cooler looks alot worse than his does...lol

if it was bent on purpose, you would see fins bent in a particular pattern. these fins bent over time and wind impact. they are bowed out. if it were intentional, the fins would be bent in one direction.

I did the 2 of my R1 about a year ago and you won't believe your eyes when you get them back. :icon_tup:

I'll provide updates at significant stages - after initial contact with techs, return of coolers and install progress.

Today, I received the dual oil coolers from American Coolers. Take a look at the after-pics. The installation/upgrade from single to dual coolers will begin in a few weeks.

sorry but im not that impressed.... i can do that with a flat head and some needle nose pliars in an hour or two... in fact i did... i dont see anything significant besides them bending the fins back one by one...


harbor frieght sells a rad fin comb for like 5 bucks... i was using it on my intercooler and it works pretty well straightening out like 5-10 fins at a time.....

They don't just bend the fins out - they flush the cooler and certify it as being clean and clear. This doesn't sound like much, but I've known people (a 350z guy I know of) who had a motor that spun bearings due to incorrect assembly, got a new motor put in, and swiftly killed it due to all the foreign debris still stuck in the oil cooler.

They flush it out and have an in-line filter that's rated at so many microns, when it doesn't show any more contaminants they swap to a finer filter and so on. This way they can certify the oil cooler is perfectly clean, free from particulates, and safe to use.

The majority of the work they do is for the aircraft industry. If you have an oil cooler full of crap on a plane and you kill the engine, you crash the plane :).

^^ ahh well then that DOES make it worth it, ive read about this idea before but no one mentioned that (IIRC) seems like a pretty good deal

Not to mention that they reapplied the black thermal coating. You can see in the before pics that the rads had a red hue between the fins (font clip must have been repainted). In the after pics a majority of the red paint is not there. I can see a little in person but it is not nearly as bad as before. They used a special thermal coating paint that aids in transfer of heat.

there is a second page to the work order that states: "The component identified above [oil cooler] was repaired in accordance with the current regulations of the Federal Aviation Administration, and is approved for return to service."

How often do you get a component in your car that is certified to meet FAA standards?
