Drove it back to Phoenix last week... First impressions... and questions...

Hey all. Well, I did it. I bought the Black on Tan in Ft. Wayne, IN and drove it all the way back to Phoenix. The car ran great. No problems at all.

Check the link in the sig for pics. Those are the pics the seller sent me. Now, the car is at my house and I just got the windows tinted today. It's looking better already!

Couple of questions. I noticed that in windy conditions and going around 80 or 90, I got a real annoying screeching noise coming from either under the hood or in the cabin. Like wind noise from somewhere. It almost sounded like it was speaker static, but it was wind noise related. Anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

Also, I noticed that the car hestates at around 5k and then again at 6k. I know about the 3k and it does that too, but the 5k and 6k are annoying. Any ideas on how to smooth it out a little. Also, the car idles a little rough with the air on. It's smooth without it, but turn it on and the car roughs up a bit. Banzai Racing replaced all 4 plugs before I drove it home, so I was thinking maybe the wires? I don't know.

I noticed the tranny shifts a little rough, so I plan on going synthetic in the tranny and diff. I'm still undecided on oil, so I'll keep reading the forums about that.

Other than those little things, the runs perfect. No smoke, It's only got 24k miles on it now. Need to get it registered and titled in my name still.

Congratulations on the purchase. 24,00 miles, that's quite the car!

I'm sure many will jump in to help you with your issues. As I'm not the best mechanic, others would serve you better in this area. I know, though, they'll need more details than what you've described. For example, can you be more specific with the noise problem? Any way to isolate where the noise is coming from? Tha'ts definately not normal for the car. As for the hesitation issues, the car should be pretty smooth. You should notice a "transition" at about 4,500 RPMs, when the secondary turbo kicks in. But it should be a very smooth power curve throughout the RPM band. As you car hasn't been modified at all, you should be able to track down these problems and get them fixed.

My advice would be to take the car to a reputable rotary person in your area. Maybe someone would have advice for you where to go in Phoenix. Best of luck!

phoenix in the summertime... first thing should be bigger rad and AST. good luck with it

Hell yeah you need to replace that AST. My car only has 41K miles on it and the AST split this week on it. The Tripoint one is NICE!

Congrats on the purchase, sorry I don't have more advice for you!

could be a boost leak.

I'm in Phoenix, I have a black single turbo FD...its a 94 with about 80K miles.

We should meet up sometime in the next few weeks. I am waiting on a new manifold from A-spec, but after that comes I will be good to go. We will see how long that takes...

Glad to see another FD in Phoenix! Upgraded cooling is a must.

Yea, the first mods are a new AST and an upgraded radiator, cooler thermostat, water wetter, and all that.

Then comes the down pipe, air intake, exhaust, fuel pump... all that good bolt on stuff...

Cozmo, good to hear I'm not alone in Phoenix. I think there's a Phoenix Rotary Club in town, do you know anything about it? PM me or email me some time...

I know there is no boost leaks going on. Before I bought the car, it was checked out by Banzai Racing and they did compression and boost tests and the car is perfect in that respect. It's almost like it's "missing" or something when trying accelerate, that's why I'm thinking grounding or spark wires.

The noise is just a wind related noise. I drove it today and the wind was nothing, I couldn't get it to make the noise at all. Its like it only happens during windy days and highway speeds. I don't know...

I suggest that you enjoy the car "as is" for a while. Don't rush in to modifying it. You have a nice car that runs great :).

The most important thing to learn about this forum:

Don't expect decent advice on the weekends. The veterans (with the most knowlege) don't spend much time on-line on the weekends. Much of the advice won't be the best unless you ask during the week ;)
