Driving Your Modified RX-7 On The Street

Hey Guys,

I'm farely new to the Rx-7. I used to own an Intergra TypeR couple years back and have always wanted to get a Rx-7.

Well, I finally got my Rx-7 and is in the process of modifying it. I plan to install veilside DP GT-1 bodykit w/ veilside type II GT wing, HKS exhaust, single turbo, intercooler....blah blah blah plus a new set of volk wheels. Now, am I gonna have a lot of problem with the cops? To those w/ modified Rx-7, did you have to worry about cops all the time? If so, how do you deal with it?

THanks

I imagine if what is constantly said on the net is true you will have issues in CA. In the great state of Kansas I've never been bothered.

DMoneyRX-7 08-17-06 07:18 PM

prob in cali. do us fd owners a favor. when you get the body kit dont post pics of it. you will get flamed like crazy. many owners hate the veilside kits. im just tryin to help you out. look around for other body kits. since you are new to the FD scene you might not know but there are some other very awesome Japanese manufacturers such as FEED or RE-Amemiya. Look for inspiration in pics like here http://s99.photobucket.com/albums/l293/limbar85/
Best thing to do is get all the problems fixed and reliability mods done. If not then you will probably have all these aftermarket parts and no more money to get your 7 running right. good luck with your 7

Well Im a fellow californian and my car stands out pretty well, plus cops can hear me miles away... but i have yet to even be pulled over or harassed*knocks on wood till knuckles are bloody* so as long as you dont drive like a jackass i doubt youll have too many problems, but ill wish you luck just in case they are like rx7 club people and hate veilside ;)

NuTbAgSaN 08-17-06 07:46 PM

i agree rethink veilside ugh...i never had a problem here (CO) in fact whenever cops have pulled up next to me they just start talking to me. never happens in any of my other cars either. weird.
thing is were not really on the same level as the little hondas and crap. this is a classy car so its not really looked down on by most cops and people in general. that ties in with the kit thing as well, especially in cali i wouldnt do the veilside thing for that reason as well as the fact its just fugly.

GoodfellaFD3S 08-17-06 08:47 PM

Please don't turn your FD into 'The Angry Catfish.' Stay away from veilside.

Ditto.

VegasFD 08-17-06 09:42 PM

I think it has more to do with how you drive than what you drive. That being said, if you put that Veilside kit on your car, you deserve to get pulled over- seriously.

TurboTagTeam 08-17-06 09:48 PM

I'v only had a problem because of my tinted windows. Other than that the cops tend to leave me alone.

I agree that a veilside body kit does not belong on our cars. They look like trashy and take away from the classy apeal of our cars.

RaPtOr-T 08-17-06 11:55 PM

Dont put a bodykit on, and dont put a big canister exhaust on, and dont tint the windows, and dont drive like a dumbass. - Apparently those are the CA rules imports have to follow, atleast thats what I've gathered. :)

SayNoToPistons 08-18-06 12:07 AM

oh no.. not the Veilside wing...

FD_RICKY 08-18-06 12:09 AM

walnut? so youre by MT. SAC? i think that you will attract a cops attention with the hks exhaust. its huge and its loud; ive been pulled over many times cause of it.

EjCabrera 08-18-06 12:11 AM

whoa another fd in walnut. what color is yours i think i might have seen you driving around. well cops in walnut dont really give a shit unless your flooring it. especially in walnut you have to know where those cops hide. if you go ride near the 57 south near angel stadium thats where the po's will get you.

Rpat312 08-18-06 12:14 AM

i said do the burnout kit for ur car if u wanna stand out, but anything thing besides veilside. hell even the 99spec s better than that ugly shit.

moconnor 08-18-06 12:33 AM

I think there is a specific prohibition against Veilside kits on FDs in the California Vehicle Code.

Rufio 08-18-06 12:47 AM

iv never had a problem with cops, i drove around with no muffler for a week, even with a cop behind me, never got pulled over, iv never gotten pulled over for no front plate, i dk how it is in california. Veilside kit? another FD owned...

'even' the 99 spec? I think the 99 spec looks better than 99% of the aftermarket fiberglass bumpers out there.......

93rx74lyfe 08-18-06 08:53 AM

yes in cali you are going to get attention. pretty much everywhere you go the fd is going to get you looks, but with Vielsides god awfull kit im sure your going to get alot more negative attention. but with the cops as long as you dont act stupid they shouldent bother you.

good luck with your project, and congtrats on the new car

ptrhahn 08-18-06 09:01 AM

The more "mature" you have your car look, the less likely you'll be to get hassled.

Whenever you're thinking about a visual mod, ask yourself this simple question: Would I do this to my Porsche 911, Ferrari 360, or or other high-end or vintage car?

There's a reason there's no such thing as a "Veilside Maranello"

scratchjunkie 08-18-06 11:11 AM

theres only two things i worry about when driving my fd in cali.

1. no front license plate
2. tinted windows

i have gotten numerous tickets for no front plate and tinted windows, but never any hassle about modifications. i guess my rb single exhaust looks and sounds like a stock unit to get attention for modifications.

recon fd 08-18-06 11:17 AM

Exhaust for you would = low key racing beat.

Veilside FTL

scotty305 08-18-06 11:51 AM

I think most people are thinking of the old Veilside 'shogun-style' bodykit, like the one on Vin Diesel's RX-7 in the Fast and Furious movie. The Veilside D1 kit looks a lot like the latest thing on Japanese drift cars.

If you're worried about cops, keep the car as stock-looking as possible, because officers will use your bodykit as 'probable cause' to pop your hood and search the inside of your car. "Because only criminal street-racers modify their cars, right?" Also, a single turbo conversion is NOT going to be street legal, if you get pulled over they'll cite you for modified emissions/smog equipment which is a big fine.

Good luck, and don't forget the reliability mods. Go read the FAQ:

1. Quiet subtle exhaust (Racing Beat dual-tip).

2. No body kit, especially one as ugly as Veilside.

3. No single turbo.

I make over 350 rwhp with a conservative tune. My car does not look modified from the outside. I don't get harassed.

recon fd 08-18-06 02:45 PM

Body kit = this......
