drivetrain noise?

after taking the fd to the track, i had some wheel hop on my last run and started getting a "whirrrrrrrr" noise from the drivetrain on decel, whether the car is in gear or out of gear. my first thought was the diff, so i put in a tII vlsd, but the noise is still there...... it'd have to be in the tranny then right? it doesn't do it at all on acceleration or if maintaining a constant speed.

bump......anyone have this before? output shaft maybe?

Broken09 05-16-06 08:37 AM

does it do it regardless of clutch position?

adictd2b00st 05-16-06 12:06 PM

correct, always on decel regardless of clutch in/out

You probably damaged something in the rear diff, I would suggest not launching the car hard anymore until you check this, also you sound like you should be using a rear diff brace, it will help you from breaking it in the future.

somthing in the diff besides the actual guts then? it kinda sounds like it coming more from the middle of the car tho from what i can tell

Any chance you have a transmission brace? I had a similar situation and it ended up just being one of the nuts for the PPF stud that came loose, not completely but enough that there was some added noise.

yes i do have a transmission brace, but didn't at the time when the problem occurred

Well like I said I had a similar noise issue. Check all those nuts for the PPF on the trans and the diff. I could have sworn it was the gears in the trans whining but wasn't. Worth a look before you tear everything apart.

definitly, i'll take a look anywho, thanks

well, bringing this back up cause unfortunately i still have the noise. i've swapped transmissions and rear end "guts" and checked for any loose bolts on the tranny brace etc. looks like i'm having some sort of issue with the rear end ring/pinion gear at this point huh

That does sound like a worn pinion bearing. Can you get any play when you wiggle the flange the driveshaft bolts onto? (Keep in mind, it's going to be very faint play).

It may help to drain the diff oil and look for metal flakes, which would clearly indicate bearing wear.
