Downpipes different for Automatics?
 

I am trying to install a DP on a 94 auto and having trouble with interference from the automatic transission. Does anyone know if the downpipes are the same for the auto and the manual cars?


Has anyone done this on an auto? I seached but couldn't find anything specific.

All should be the same. Mine fit.

My HKS DP fits my AT FD.

I had the Megan Racing DP which is considered one of the less easy to install DP's and it had no problems with my AT and no problems once I swapped to MT either.

No, my RX7 Fashion DP fit great on my automatic.

My M2 downpipe fits fine on my auto FD :D

I'm going back under to try it again, but I am not encourged by the person who had to remove a motor mount on one side to get it in. Might just be a poorly made pipe. Does anyone think jacking the car on one side would twist the tranny to one side?

Does DP required in a Jap Spec FD?
I own an imported s6 and As far as i know the jap spec doesn't come with a pre-cat. So should I get a DP?

kuning, it wasnt until the S7 (96+) that the JDM RX-7's had lost the pre-cat in favor of a DP due to the excessive heat.

My Pettit stainless dp fits fine. It IS more of a bitch to get wrangled around the tranny on automatic cars, but once you have it lined up it is no problem.

I believe none of the Japanese FD's had a precat. But, the stock downpipe is big, cast iron, and restrictive - almost as bad as our precat :).

Any right hand drive FD needs a downpipe from Japan - an American-built downpipe won't clear the steering column.

My pipe still doesn't fit, I think it is a poorly made pipe, but one thing I did notice, and maybe it is obvious but it helps to jack up the car evenly.

The downpipe in general is a bitch but my M2 one fit fine.

We tried to put an RX-7 store downpipe on an automatic and the pipe hits the pan on the auto, not even a close fit. I'll call Jason Tuesday.

Take a pair of channel locks or vise grips and remove the studs from the exh manifold. Then try again. Once it's in place insert the studs then put the nuts on. Use never sieze on the stud threads - both ends

Just another reason to buy a well-made pipe....

The dp isn't even connected to the cat, it's free. When you bolt it up top it hits, no way around it.

Yep. but in fairness to Jason the pipe is nice, nice welds, not poorly made in any way. The pipe just needs to be about 3/4 of inch lower near the back.

I've had to "oval" a DP a time or 2 to get clearance between the studs and frame before. The trans pan is so fat that the back flange of the dp hits it JUST as you are about to get the studs lined up on the engine side.
