Downpipe and Midpipe ?

I was just wondering if you were to get the downpipe and midpipe combo package that if you would have to do any other mods to the car to make it work or if you just bolt them on? And also how much hp you would get around with the downpipe/midpipe and also I have a Apexi N1 exhuast already.

ReodDai 01-20-04 11:11 AM

which combo exactly?

FastCat17 01-20-04 11:31 AM

The DP/MP combo from rx7trix.com for $325

It would be very wise to have some sort of boost controller on the car, and necessary to have a boost gauge installed so you know if it works.

Sorry but im all new to this and want to learn about the Rx7 as much as I can and I want to sup mine up but yea dont really know what all to do right, but why would you need a boost controller if you just get a downpipe or midpipe? but i could see why you would need the boost gauge.

speeddemon7 01-20-04 11:46 AM

because a midpipe and downpipe will raise your boost levels dramatically.therfore putting your engine at serious risk of blowing.to make a long story short.dont boost past 10 or 11 psi on a stock ecu.

ReodDai 01-20-04 11:48 AM

More air going through the turbos faster = more boost. Stock ecu doesn't regulate the boost therefore you need something that will.

FastCat17 01-20-04 11:50 AM

ok then what if i was just to get the downpipe? and now knowing that i have to get some sort of management system, what would be the cheapest and best way?because dont you need a management system in order to have a boost controller?

David Beale 01-20-04 11:51 AM

Freeing up the exhaust backpressure will allow the turbos to go crazy, and the stock system can't handle that. It's designed for a "plugged up" exhaust (stock exhaust is quite restrictive).

I suggest you read a lot more. Downpipe and midpipe are a good combination, but only after you have done lots of other things. Get the combo, but for now just install the downpipe. The mid pipe is easy to do later. It replaces the cat. With just the downpipe, you should be safe, but for sure get a boost gauge and make sure it doesn't go over 10 PSI, except at transition (10-8-10 is perfect but many cars will have a small boost spike at transition - when the second turbo comes on line at 5800 RPM).

you don't need anything for a manual boost controller. Get that and a boost gauge... learn what your car does and what the normal readings are. THEN worry about modding it. Make sure it works before you break it unknowingly.

Get the DP only for now.
Get boost gauge.
Get aluminium AST.
Get better radiator.
Get a boost controller and intakes.
Replace fuel filter.
Replace spark plugs.

That should get you started. In the meantime read around the forum. Sticky threads are there with a reason ;)

Check the newbie links too. It will help you understand what to do and in what steps.
