Downpipe installation! Searched!
hey guys. I've searched and for the life of me I can't find any info on this specific aspect of a down pipe installation.
Does installing a down pipe on a completely stock FD cause unwanted boost problems? I'm primarily doing it as a reliability mod to eliminate the precat and also have the down pipe coated and wrapped. |
oh it's there. I'm sure of it cause I searched for turbo removal process. Maybe people don't have direct threads about it because the process is simple
A. Installing the Downpipe will cause no problems, only louder spooling of turbos and quicker reaction. I did mine 4 years ago but this is what I remember. 1. I did the whole thing under the car. so jack it up 2. buy some new bolts for the downpipe to cat. I had to sawzaw mine off and replace. 3. take off all of the heat shields near the downpipe. (I never replaced them, and if you wrap the downpipe you probably don't have to replace them either) 4. take off the O2 sensor 5. wet down the nuts on the downpipe, they are a bitch to get off. 6. take off the nuts, which is a tricky proposistion due to how little room you have. 7. Then jiggle, and viola, the pipe is off, replace with new pipe. The whole process isn't much harder than putting on a new exhaust. |
If everything else is stock, the answer is generally no. If your boost was 10psi it will most likely stay at 10psi.

Careful taking it off, people tend to put downforce pressure and breaking the bolts, resulting in having to take off the turbos...not a fun thing to do when your intension was to simply install a downpipe...

buy yourself some PB blaster and spray all the nuts down real good and let it sit overnight.If you snap any studs off in the manifold you'll be in a world of shit.Then you'll be searching for removal of stock twins hahaha.

Yes, you'll need to remove the heat shield to access the studs. I suggest you spray some on the crack where the downpipe flange and turbo manifold meet, since most likely the studs will come out of the manifold rather than the nuts coming off of the studs. If you spray on that seam there is a decent chance the PB will work its way to that part of the threads.
