which downpipe is best?

Downpipe options? If ive missed one please let me know.Thanx.
So far ive found about4 or five different downpipes.
The m2 dp $295 stainless steel
Pettit dp $295 stainless steel
Rx7Trix dp $215 stainless steel
Bonez dp $210 stainless steel
HKS dp $199 mild steel
Id love to get the hks one as its probably the most well know company but I dont think they make a stainless steel downpipe. If they do let me know. Also whats this I hear about having to remove the turbo manifold studs to replace the precat with a downpipe. How big of a pain in the ass is it to remove the precat and replace it with a downpipe. Also how much louder did your catback become when you changed out to a downpipe.please share your experiences as it will help me decide on what to do and which one to get.I know that the m2 one claims that its specifically designed so that you dont have to remove the studs.I basically want the easiest instalation for a stainless steel 3 inch downpipe.

I say go to rx7triz or rx7store.net and get the dp / mp combo for 325, I think its a helll of a deal

speeddemon7 01-11-04 02:33 AM

well im definatly going to be changin out the precat for a downpipe but I wont be running a midpipe.High flow cat is the better option for me.Plus it will make the boost spiking issue easier to control as well as less of a cop magnet.Do you know who sells high flow cats.Looking for a fw options on these as well.Thanx

http://www.rx7store.net or http://www.rx7store.com I inf bnoth of those very useful for all or most of my parts, also look around the parts for sale forum

speeddemon7 01-11-04 02:38 AM

r u running a downpipe?

MazdaRx7Racer4Life 01-11-04 02:42 AM

yeah, and on stock ecu, so Im a little shaky, Im saving up for either an m2 ecu or a power fc, still haven't made up my mind on whats best for the 350hp range.

s-thetikz 01-11-04 02:43 AM

how much does it cost to upgrade ECU for a downpipe ?

speeddemon7 01-11-04 02:50 AM

well The power fc is roughly 1200 bucks.Although I have an easier solution. Its a boost controller. As long as you limit the amount of boost to 10 or 11 psi your engine should be fine. Also from what I understand the apex comes with a boost controler but that its hardly adequate. So a separate boost controler makes perfect sense.

Does anyone know of any other high flow cats besides the pettit and bonez?

The Pettit CAT plates broke off and failed within 6 months. Replaced it with a pettit and it happened again.
Random Tech CAT clogged in one year.
The Bonez CAT has been on for 2 years now and no problem.

thank you once again for saving my ass and wallet there mahjik.Bonez high flow cat it is.I cant say im surprised that the pettit ones suck.A while back I had bought some supposedly rebuilt secondary injectors from rx7trix.Well brandon the guy from rx7trix had none in stock so he called all the other companies for me.XS engineering and Pettit were amongst some of them.So he gets some for me from pettit and I guess Pettit just shipped them straight to me without brandon ever seing them.I get them and they look like someone took off their old injectors, and threw them in a box and called it a day.Plus they were all black with carbon and one of em was even cracked.Needless to say I was fuckin pissed. So I called brandon at rx7trix and told him the whole deal.He was pissed about it also and he did everything he could to right the problem.I had to wait a while untill blitz had some more secodaries in but when they came in he sent me new ones.Pettit has lost my business forever.I will still do business wih rx7 trix.

Oh yeah one more thing mahjik.I couldnt help but notice that you had the bonez downpipe as well. How is the quality and instalation of the dp? Were there any fitment issues or quality issues? if not then I know where im getting my dp and high flow cat from.Thanx.

Nathan Kwok 01-11-04 01:53 PM

I went with the HKS dp because it far and away looks the most stock. Every other dp, especially polished SS ones, are clearly aftermarket. Even if you jet hot the outside of another brand matte gray, it still doesn't convey the stock look like the cast cobra head of the HKS model. If this isn't a priority for you, then the HKS is actually the worst (except in terms of price). HKS looses out on lightness and corrosion resistance to anything made of SS.

Svelte_7 01-11-04 01:53 PM

I've had the HKS downpipe for a few years now and have no problems. And from what I've heard, there are fitment issues with SOME brands of downpipe; the HKS downpipe is an EXACT fit.

If your car is otherwise stock, you can get a downpipe and another mod (except the midpipe - boost creep issues) before you need an ECU upgrade. Try a search for the 3-mod rule.

No problems with the Bonez. I did the full replacement:

I've never had a problem with my Bonez DP either. I even have the mild-steel one. No fitment issues, solid work.

speeddemon7 01-11-04 02:51 PM

I guess the bonez high flow cat and downpipe is what im going to get.Or at least the high flow cat for sure.I might give the rx7 trix downpipe a try.Anyone have this downpipe? Also I would go with the HKS unit as it is a good company but its mild steel.

All the DP's are pretty much the same. They all bolt up to the exact same places so there isn't much variance. ;)

Pettit is a good place. However, just like any other shop, they aren't great at everything. Use Pettit for their rechipped ECU's and exceptional motor rebuilds as that's what they do best. For other things, go else where.

Just the same, if my turbos needed to be rebuilt, I wouldn't send them to Pineapple, KDR or Pettit as that's not what they do best (or at all). You'll find each shop specializes in something.
