Down pipe help

hey ne one have ne tricks to get my last bolt off of the pre cat connected to the main cat? its the last one and the fucker wont come off...ive tried a torque wrench, breaker bar, longer socket, shorter socket...only thing i havent tried is the air gun....ne help at all on this one?

I had the same problem. Try soaking it in PB Blaster for about a day or so. Then go back and try. I wound up getting a new stud cause it seized in there. But eventually came out with repeated PB soakings and brut force thanks to my boyfriend and Dad.

yeah that exactly what i was using they have been soaking and saturated in this stuff for like 2 days so far with me going back and forth spraying it and using that brute force to get the damn things off...oh well guess i just have to keep doing that...and hope that one of these days the damn bolt will just float off like butter....

Pretty much what she said.

If you're removing an aftermarket downpipe, then also use a jack to lift the rear flange of the downpipe by maybe an inch. Sometimes the weight of the cat/dp is enough to put some extra pinch on the last bolt.

lol i even thought of that...yeah its the stock pre cat im takin off to put on my downpipe...i tried moving it up and lowering it a little to see what might work better...but that thing is in there good...and it just has to be the last bolt of course

shrtyGT500 10-24-05 07:02 PM

get a torch and heat that sucker up.....:)

twisted7 10-24-05 07:33 PM

haha wouldnt that just cause the stud to break on there? i mean if a torch will work i have one.....but after all that pb blaster....i would have one hell of a fire and would have to start all over again on another car....:( cant have that

mmaluso 10-24-05 07:55 PM

How bout liquid wrench?... dont know if thats any better than pb blaster though. I always get my bolts off with a titanium lacrosse shaft. Have any kind of steel tubing you can use for some massive torque? By the way I'm pretty sure it screws up the calibration if you use a torque wrench as a breaker bar... I could be wrong though.

twisted7 10-24-05 08:04 PM

life time warranty :) i believe almost all torque wrenches have this :)...yeah ive used a breaker bar...kinda need a lift to get more leverage...only have about a foot and a half to work under the car if that

mmaluso 10-24-05 08:21 PM

Really? My freakin craftsman one doesn't have a warranty. It is like the only hand tool they have that doesn't.

twisted7 10-24-05 08:29 PM

damn well thats shitty...i wish i had a lift...this would be a thousand times easier

Use a regular size wrench on the bolt, snug it on tight then do this: Get an average size box end(or closed end) wrench to get more leverage on it. Take the closed end wrench, any size above 9/16 or 14 mm and connect it to the end of the wrench on the bolt for more leverage.
If you don't understand what I'm saying sorry! lol But You need to be creative when doing this. Trust me! It works great!.
BTW, after you snap the head right off the stud, you'll have to go to Sears (Yes Sears) and buy a socket type stud removal kit. About 50-bucks. But once you have them you'll all of a sudden find use for all the time. Also, I found that heating up the stud with a propane torch worked wonders. Get it hot! Good luck! Hope this makes sence, D

lol yeah ive tried that idea thanks...its been soaking overnight for now...again....i am gonna give it another shot...if it doesnt work im going to prob try to heat it up and then watch as it snaps off lol...i need to get new bolts for the new dp ne ways so might as well since im already making a trip...ill just some pics of the final install

twisted7 10-25-05 02:22 PM

so after a little bit of cursing...hell what am i saying after a lot of cursing...i was able to get the thing off!...took off the shield around the tranny and was able to get more leverage...damn that fucking pre cat is heavy...glad this dp is light :) thanks for the help guys...the suggestions were useful..:) :smiley309
