Door sillplates/scuffplates/kickplates???
 

Hi there guys.
Most of you probably know me from the carbon fiber interior parts thread. Well, in my quest to provide carbon interior bits for FD owners, I've come up against a bit of a question I dont know the answer to. Maybe someone on the forums can help me out?:Wconfused

The sill plates/scuff plates that are inside the door jam of our FD's, come in two variations I'm aware of-

1. Thin black plastic versions, with 'RX-7' on them

2. Alloy wide versions, with a gold 'RX-7' embossed on them.

Now here's my question- What cars came out with which?? I have cars with both, but to make carbon fibre copies, I'd just like to know which ones you guys think would be worthwhile making. I want to make sure I mould the correct ones which most FD owners will want.

So can you please take the time to post which version you prefer? I'd greatly appreciate it :)

1. Thin black plastic versions, with 'RX-7' on them

These came stock on all american Rx7s. They were prone to breaking after some time while being removed. They came in black, tan and red.

2. Alloy wide versions, with a gold 'RX-7' embossed on them.

These were an OEM upgraded accessory. These do away with the breakable tabs and used two SS screws to secure them to the threshold. Much sought after, but easily scratched if not taken care of. These would be the better example to make your sills after.

In light of that, because the alloy ones are the upgraded pieces, I think I should make them instead of the plastic ones. I was leaning towards them anyway, because they will look cooler in carbon fibre than the thin little plastic ones. :)

Only thing is, I may not be able to put the 'RX-7' lettering on them.. What I could do, is make the lettering hollow (ie, cut the letters out) and then fix a shiny gold/polished alloy backing plate behind the letters, to make them stand out.

So, next question is: Do we all want the 'RX-7' lettering on them, or are the majority of us happy to have plain carbon sillplates??

(What I like about these kinds of parts is that they will fit both jap spec & U.S./Australian cars irrespective of LH or RH drive. So everyone can have a set, no matter what country you live in, or even if you're from the U.S & like to drive on the wrong side of the road.. :lol: )

do you have any idea what price?

I would want them to say Rx-7, othewise I'd purchase the alloy ones. IMO, it wouldn't have to be gold, it would just have to display Rx-7 in some fashion

An idea I had a while back to prevent these from scratching was to adhere a 1-2'' wide piece of mole skin to the bottom of the door panel. Cost would be about 5-10 dollars worth of material.


I have yet to order any aluminum scuff plates and try it though, but plan to in the future.
