Does this happen to you?

Do you guys find that your RX drinks up all of your oil before it's even time to change it?

Also, what kind of oil do you use?

Thanks!

The FD burns oil as part of its design, so there will be some definite oil loss over time, depending on driving habits. It shouldn't be "using up all of the oil before it's even time to change it", however; obviously, you should be checking the level frequently to avoid this. Or, you have an oil leak somewhere.

Do a search on oil brands, this has been discussed ad nauseum.

This happens to every 7 owner. Rotaries by design burn oil like a 2-stroke. That's why you need to check your oil level every few weeks and top off when needed. As for oil, I use Castrol GTX 10W/30 w/OEM filters.

my last rx7 burned 1/2 a quart every 3000 miles all the way to 161,000 miles then i sold it.

1 Qt / 2000 mi for my '94 FD (Dead)
2 Qt / 3000 mi for my '93 FD (probhably less now that's it rebuilt.. :D )
So it varies, but yes, and as long as the car doesn't look like it's buring up when you drive down the street, you can't have too much oil injection.
What should worry you is Oil in the coolant, that's a sign of a bad water seal...

All of my rx buddies use GTX 10W-30, most common among the rotary family. You can use most oils, just make sure its changed ever 2000-2300. Your turbos last longer the more you change it.

JONSKI 02-02-04 08:12 PM

I just hope you're not waiting until your oil changes to top it off.

The reason your oil goes down the way that it does is because of your oil metering pumps it shoots a small amount of oil into the rotor houseing during combustion.

I change my oil every 1500 miles. Due to the rotaries healthy appetite for oil and a damn oil leak(the dealer already fixed twice). I also top it off once a week just to be safe.

blueskaterboy 02-03-04 10:51 AM

castrol gtx 10w30

i change my oil every 1000-1500 miles because i am insane. a new filter every 3000-4500.

gotta love your baby!!!

Tell ya the truth, my driving habits vary so much, I change my oil when it starts getting dark regardless of mileage or every 6 months.

TwinTriangles 02-03-04 08:59 PM

I change mine every 1000-1500, I usually check it every time I drive it but it never seems to be low when I check anyway

Castrol GTX 20w-50 here....good stuff
