Do you recommend I buy this Improted RX-7?

I am looking to purchase an RX-7.

I found this one that I very much like.
LINK TO AUTOTRADER
Based on the information in the Advert, is it a good deal?

Also, If anyone knows anything about imports...

Do RX-7 Imports need anything special to pass inspection and MVA laws?
(maryland)

thanks...

No you should not buy it. The JDM imports are illegal. Search this forum for other threads on the topic.

You probably won't even be able to register or inspect it.

94tkt 11-09-09 08:33 PM

first off they are not illegal and if it is registered right now then you shouldn't have a problem registering it.

i personally like the US spec FD's better. You don't have the steering column in the way and the brake MC isn't right above the turbos cooking the fluid.

other than that its up to you. oh and parts will be a PITA to get a hold of especially interior parts

It's not legal by "Federal" laws, however that doesn't mean it cannot be registered by a state. It also doesn't mean the government won't ever decide to come and impound the car if they feel like rounding up all these illegal cars like the Skylines they are currently grabbing:

So what you guys are saying is this car is basically illegal and I shouldn't buy it?

that letter was from california so of course they don't want "illegal" cars. look at their emissions and inspections they do so often. I live in florida and they give you registration and will insure skylines and other imported cars. a guy near me has a eurospec porsche 959 but he takes it out of the country for a month every year

The letter was from the US Department of Justice.

Again, getting a state registration has nothing to do with Federal requirements. The Skyline owners have/had state registrations which obviously isn't enough. People can choose to do what they want, however they need to make an "informed" decision.

Oh ok. SO I Guess it depends on the specific state.

Well. I will call my MVA tomorrow and hopefully they will give me a good answer regarding import rx 7s.

theorie 11-09-09 09:25 PM

ONLY $10K?!?

registered or not, this is clearly a scam.

Well I called the guy and he said he wouldn't mind if I came by to test drive the car.

XLR8 11-09-09 09:45 PM

I'll bet the guy is in England and he is having his friend/lawyer sell it.....

Get a US FD in good condition from a reputable owner.... PERIOD!!!!!!!!

until you see the car IN PERSON, i would consider it a scam.

Sounds too good to be true...

No it does not - it has nothing to do with individual states. Importation is a federal issue. Have you actually read any of the previous threads on this issue?

Natey 11-09-09 10:41 PM

Good luck.

tnn 11-09-09 10:53 PM

hmm.. why do you go thru all kind of trouble for this car. there's plenty of nice FD on sale for a little more.

OK just to repeat what has been said a million types it can be done, you can import it.
However it is not worth the time and money you will put into it to drive it on the road.
Getting it here would be the easy part getting it registered and licensed,
would be the most difficult and cost you the most money to do it legally.
(Closer to 2 or 3 times the amount of a USDM)

That said you have a couple options otherwise...

1. Take vin from junkyard and put it on and register it (Highly illegal don't do it)

2. Buy a USDM FD get front clip from J-spec FD if you are so crazy about JDM RHD zomg!!! Weld in part of the RHD firewall and replace the dash and steering column etc. (Legal long as you keep your VIN)

3. Buy a USDM FD and be happy

4 Wait till 2017 and import one legally :P

edit: Just a side note if you don't want to drive the FD save on the Track you can get it imported for track use or for car shows

Not quite as easy as it used to be:
