do i need to cover my vis CF hood when it raining?
 

hi guys.just got a really nice vis CF hood with four hole!!! but i worry when i install
it if raning the water will come in the engine bay. is that ok? should i cover those
hole? plaese help!!!

If you are worried about the water coming in, I suggest you take off that "toy" hood and put the one that was made for the car back on it.
Will water in the engine bay hurt anything? Probably not, although certain electrical components don't usually respond well to a good dousing on a regular basis.

I think vented hoods are not for daily driving. If you can't afford to leave it in the garage and drive the beater on the rainy days, then throw the stocker back on. Water and electricity don't mix well.

A little water certainly isn't going to hurt anything.....

That said, it would be best to use the rain trays for the winter (since you don't need the additional cooling anyway) and then take them back out for the summer months. This works very well in the Bay Area where it goes several months without raining.

BTW, this really should have occured to you BEFORE you bought the hood. Didn't VIS include rain trays or offer them as options?

i leave my car windows down and put the cover on, it keeps everything dry and lets the car breathe instead of getting funky ;)

its probally fine, people drive around wiht the scoot hood in the rain wiht out any problem.

Hey obviousboy what car cover do you have that is completely waterproof? I though all of them let atleast a little wetness in. ....wait, did that sound like an ad for depends? :)

just make sure all electrical connections are not frayed and everythign looks tight.. a little water is not going to hurt anything

I have the same hood you are talking about, and I have been running the hood for about 6 months now and I had a few problems with sum rust on the battery terminals, and the earth wires going to it. Took it off cleaned them up with some sand paper, car runs fine now. Was having slight grounding problems before I cleaned them, other than that it is fine to run it with out rain gaurds. Just clean the battery terminals when you clean your car.

I have the scoot hood and I have no problem at all in the rain. Also I don't have the rain guards on and still have no problem.

i have the scoot hood with the rain gutters but i cant tell you if its ok on a daily basis because its been sitting in my storage for months now... also, i clean the engine with the gunk cleaner and water all over the engine bay with no problems! the stock engine is fully submarciable (i killed that word :()

I have a VIS cf vented hood on my daily driven FD for 1year only problem I ever had is if it rains real hard and my car isn't parked with the front of the car pointed up an incline the air filters get soaked .

Don't let the hype get to ya...a lot of people run vented CF hoods and have been caught in the rain - heavy rain at that - w/ no ill effects. I had the same concern before I bought my vented CF hood, but I was assured it wouldn't be a problem, and it hasn't been a problem to date (over a year).

Oh and Rynberg, no, VIS doesn't ship its vented hoods w/ rainguards. Maybe if you request them they do, but they don't tell you anything about them...

No kidding - has anybody ever been underneath their car? The under tray extends only so far. Anybody with a stock hood should drive around in the rain, then pop the hood immediately after. I'll bet you'll be surprised how much water splashes up into the bay from the underside.

It's certainly no big deal to get rain drops into the intake - hell, a number of us purposely inject water into the engine with WI. Just make sure the fuse boxes and other electrical components are well covered. Those are really the only parts you don't want to get wet.

Water on the ignition leads is a problem under full throttle. I experienced this when my WI nozzle leaked onto my Taylor spark plug wires. Most folks tend not to run at WOT in the rain, if your car runs fine wet then the only issue is long term corrosion of components and wiring or shorting of electrical components that collect water. I'm not opposed to the Mazdaspeed like hoods with vents at front of the hood but hoods with open vents above the engine would be an issue under rain conditions ... I suspect they cool the underhood wonderfully and they look truly sick but I would not drive with it in the rain. Just my opinion.

I have daily driven for 4 years with a vented hood with a fairly large opening and had no problems ever. It rained hard on me numerous times when I lived in Northern California. It is not a big deal. Honestly, you would be surprised at how little water gets in the vents. At any kind of speed, a few drops might get in. When you are parked, some water will seep in, but nothing like the waterfall that people get scared about. Cars are made to drive in the elements. Shit, I got caught in a flash flood in my last car. I looked outside my window and saw the water level almost half way up my door. You can't tell me my engine was dry. I cruised it out of the huge puddle and drove it home. No ill effects.

Yep. Try this if you don't beleive him. Leave the sunroof open while it's raining and you're driving, and see if you get wet. I've driven many a time on the highway w/ the sunroof open while it's raining in my FB (which is a HUGE sunroof) and I don't get wet at all...I'm sure the same applies to the vents on the hood (more or less).
