Do different BOVs make a difference?
 

Im in the market for a BOV right now and i was wondering if there was any difference in the working of the BOVs? I know there are sound differences but any other differences? Thanks.

P.S. if anyone is selling a BOV let me know

I think this has been covered NUMEROUS times. Not trying to be an ass or anything, stock BOV (vented if you want the PSSSHHH sound) vented into the atmo. should work fine. Unless you have some major upgrades where a bigger BOV (such as a TIAL with a ceartain spring size) is needed, just spend your money elsewhere :) .

Stock BOV is good for more PSI than the stock twins are good for. Once you upgrade your turbos, that's when you need a new BOV.

With our cars, the boost is controlled by the waste gate, not the BOV, so no, a BOV won't many any difference in anything, unless you've upgraded your turbos.

So then you agree correct? lol...by "major" upgrade, i meant a bigger Turbo and what not. What all mods do you have dont to yor car first off?

no, BOV are made to allow excess air to escape, there are two types i know of; the regular push type where the pressurized air itself pushes on the piston that is held down by a spring and maybe spacers (in some instances), which almost everyone is aware of
the other is a pull type where the pressurized air goes into a chamber and pushes a diaphragm/piston and thus pulls the BOV open...( the HKS Super Sequential Valve)

there is a theory that the pull type is better because with a push type valve it releases too much air when opening and pulls air in when closing causing a possible lean condition and even suck small pieces that can damage the motor... of course no-one really knows since i have never heard of this actually happening.

there are no power gains at all, response.... eh you can decide that for yourself
depending on quality.... always go with a name you know and can trust.... never go for cheap imitations sold on ebay, their quality is far from just OK and can actually hurt your motor in the worst case scenario...


hey if its any help, the greddy type R is a good BOV and sounds more unique than any other BOV, to certain ppl it sounds like a turkey and others say it imitates the sound of compressor surge... you should try and find it, greddy still sells it i think runs $140 retail i think,

You are in CA and venting to the atmosphere is illegal. There is no reason to switch to a single turbo type BOV other then it's one of the cheapers things you can buy, you can't blow up the engine and you want people to know you have a turbo with your loud whoosh noise.

Now with that being said, check out Turbosmartk Kompact Plumb Back Series . It's too bad they don't have a model specific version for the FD.

^^^makes no sense to me, why can't you vent the your bov into the atmosphere? It's the same air as ppl breathe but sligtly pressurized and cooled. I would understand if venting your wastegate into the atmosphere was illegal since it vents exhaust gases without going through the cat and everything but a bov? I don't get it.

As everyone said there is no sense in changing the bov with stock turbos as it will make no noticeable difference, except for perhaps changing the sound. Just a suggestion, don't buy imitations of different bov on ebay. I bought one for my wrx and the spring broke into 3 pieces within a month. If you can put a decent spring in it, then by all means go for it. The valve itself is perfectly fine and is just as good as some brand name ones but the springs they put inside are crap in most cases. If you still want to change it, I'd go for greddy or the super sequential HKS valve.

^ Well you have to duplicate how it was originally installed. So for the FD both BOV's return to the intake box and this is why a M2 style intake box is actually legal. All return hoses must be connected to the intake box just like the factory box. You can look it up, don't have the link nor care to get it right now but that is kinda how it's worded. So, since the factory BOV's return to the intake box then the aftermarket BOV(s) must return to the air intake box. You could actually fail CA smog for an aftermarket BOV just as you can for intake kits the don't retain the return hoses. You could go to a referee and get an intake kit or BOV approved and get a sticker for your hood if all the return hoses are retained and rerouted to the intake similar to OEM.

So that is the reason I posted the link above. The BOV can be used with the OEM hoses and ventilation returned to the intake box and thus making it street legal.

The stock BOV closes later than aftermarket BOV's... i.e. the BOV is open during vacuum. It closes as you begin to build boost but it closes a lot later than aftermarket BOV's. While this doesn't hurt top-end peformance, it does hurt turbo responsiveness. Garfinkle has been modifying the stock BOV with a stronger spring to have it close a little sooner, allowing boost to build much quicker. While that does help, IMO, its just better to get an aftermarket unit instead of modifying the stock one.

However, in places like California where such modifications can cause problems; modifying the stock BOV is not a bad idea.

I like the Synaps Synchronic alot. I called them and their retailers but it's not available, no estimate of when it will be and no sugested retail price.
