DIY Engine Rebuilds
How many of you have rebuilt or attempted to rebuild your own engines?
I'm planning on purchasing in the next three months and was wondering how much work is involved in rebuilding your own engine. I see lots of people sending their engines to the shop to have engine work done, but I'm in college and i'm trying to save as much money as possible by doing as much of the work myself as possible. The plan is to get a FD with blown engine or one close to the edge and go to work.. I'll have access to a garage and Pettit racing is not too far from me in Orlando (UCF) so i'd imagine if I just got stuck doing it, I could always take it up the street to them. P.S. -> I'm eager to learn and love mechanics. |
They're gonna charge you if you need their help.

:o: bump... :o:

just as a heads up, a recent price from mazdacomp on all the gaskets/seals you need for a rebuild is like $1100 alone...

Hmm.. If all the parts necessary for a rebuild cost 1100 dollars, would it be better to just get a Reman and put it in? or do the remans have to be tuned before they're installed...

many people go right for the reman, or you can wait and see what parts of a blown engine are salvageable then make a decision. usually cheaper to go with a reman. dunno what engine prices are these days, but here's one tuners price list w/labor

Thanks guys... (but I still wanted to know how many people have attempted to rebuild their own engines.. guess not too many :D)

I was going to rebuild my engine but I've decided that it'll be cheaper to get a reman and port it. If the engine blew a apex seal then there's a chance that it damaged the rotors or rotor housing.
Rebuild kit $1200 1 housing $560 That's almost the price of a reman. |
