Disassembled my engine...

I should have charged the camera! I leaned out almost back in Sept. and the front rotor gave up. I saw through the exhaust port that there was damage to both rotor and housing. I was curious to see if there was anymore. I openend it up today, and it was BAD!!! All 3 apex seals are cracked and the pieces were embeded in there. All other seals were hard to remove also, so I broke a side seal. I'm ordering a set of side and corner seals.

I will take pics tomorrow and post them up.

I also have a question, On my rear rotor, dead smack in the middle on the apex seal edge theres a spot on all 3 faces of the rotor where the thin layer of carbon has burned off or worn off...Is this detonation??? the apex seals are ok and it made enough power on that one rotor to keep the car moving and getting it home.

that's called blowby..what kind of gas were you putting in it?

:AA:

No that is not from detonation, my theory is its from the oil injection system as I have seen this on multiple engines.

this is just after a few hundred miles...I run 93 pump gas.

this is the 4th time Im rebuilding, never noticed that before and it just jumped at me right away!!!!
I like the omp theory more than the blow by or detonation ideas!

thanx fellas

Manny, you're one crazy mofo! What port you going with? When/if you talk to Alex tell him to return my calls!

Lance,

I gotta call him up, its been a few weeks! I'm about to take pics of the BP'ed secondaries on my Irons! Its gonna be a slightly different monster next year!!!!!! :D

Now here are some pics of the damage...

figures, files too large...

Here are 3 pics of all the rotor faces on the rear...you can clearly see what I was talking about before! Dead smack in the middle of the rotor/apex seal theres a spot where all the carbon has been burned off almost completely

The side and corner seals were almost seized in the rotor. I broke a side seal so instead of getting the corner seals out I just decided to get new ones since I had to order side seals anyways.

I have to clean the rotors and housings and wait for the side/corner seals. I'm trying to get it bolted back up on Monday. Dropping it in the car Tuesday and starting it right there or maybe Wednesday...

I ran out of space on the memory stick cause wifey got pics of the kids in there otherwise I'd post up pics of the BP cut housings for you guys...I'll start a thread for those in a day or two.

That's pretty standard damage for broken apex seal(s). I have even seen a few cases where chunks of the bad seal hit the manifold wall or turbine wheel and got thrown backwards into the other rotorhousing exhaust port, doing damage to both rotors and housings. Talk about a bitch when you have to explain that one and why the person's build is gonna cost almost double what they expected....

The shiny spot at the rotor tips is normal and is on every motor I take apart. I have never developed a 100% theory as to what does it...either the OMP injection or the blowby effect as the tip crosses over the plugholes. Note that the spot is only present on one side of each face depending on the direction of rotation.

yeah, talk about a hard one to explain...I thought there was gonna be more damage due to the amount of apex seal chunks/shavings I pulled out of the manifold and turbo but lucky for me the rear housing/rotor combo made it through ok. no cross contamination!

I suppose this shiny spot is normal and not a cause for concern, hell if anything its potentially a good thing(sorta). If its caused by the omp then you know your system is working right! lol

Wow, you really fragged that motor.....that rotor housing looks horrendous.

Live and learn Rich,

I will take it easy on this next one! I'm backing off the timing and adding a tad of fuel...all of this of course with a wide band!

I screwed up while trying to dial down the boost...never again! I'm getting another w/g spring. ;)

this is the GT4094R and a comparison pic with a housing...

bigstape88 12-01-07 11:13 AM

did the housing just birth something the same size? how much did you get that for?

mono4lamar 12-01-07 12:25 PM

That bridge looks really nice...

RotaryResurrection 12-01-07 01:18 PM

Full or half bridge?

Busted7 12-01-07 05:39 PM

The spots in the middle of the rotor are directly under the plug when it fires and a hot spark or lean condition burns off the carbon ive seen it look just like a rainbow with all the colors. Thats my guess and im sticking to it! :lol2:

I believe he said it's a half bridge in another thread.
