disable antenna
 

hey guys,

Can anyone tell me real quick how to disable the power to my antenna? I got a new stero system a while back and i rarely if at all listen to the radio, mostly mp3. My antenna motor is very noisey and the antenna needs a little help to go down, plus I don't always like it up just to listen to my ipod. I figured something in the manual would tell me how to disable it, but unfortunately my manual is at my other house and i wont be there for quite some time.

Just unplug the motor that raises the antenna. The motor is right under the antenna.

Even easier. All modern aftermarket radios have a wire that is marked "antenna". Just disconnect this wire. Done.

Unless he's installing a new headunit, that'd be more challenging than just unplugging the motor. However when I install headunits in my FD(2 so far), I do leave this wire disconnected.

I did have an aftermarket (Pioneer) headunit installed. so would it be easier to unplug the wire from that, or from the antenna motor?

If the head unit is already in the car, it's easier to unplug the antenna.

another option is to put a switch on the antenna wire behind the raido that would allow you to listen to the radio if you really really want to for any reason. it might be that the antenna is tied to the remote amp turn on lead and not the antenna wire. this would be the case if the antenna goes up even when playing CD's etc.

With that said the easiest is just unplug the power antenna at the back.

stupid question. how do you even get to the antenna motor? rip up the carpet in the trunk over by the antenna? or is there an easier way

the rear carpet is supposed to just lift up, don't go ripping anything. Remove the trim panel, everything should be exposed underneith.

i believe the power antenna wire behind the head unit is orange with a white stripe. disconnect the wire and cap it and the antenna will not rise.

In the back just pull out the right rear tool case storage bin cover and reach back with your arm in there. you should be able to feel the clip to unplug it. Or remove the plastics if your arm is too big.

Gears stripped
 

The gears on my antenna motor are stripped it just makes an annoying grinding noise, whenever the car is started or stopped with the stereo turned on.

I have the touring version, and with the Bose system its not so easy to pop off the trim piece.

I have taken out the jack and explored by touch, I can feel the connector and all, but I will try to do a little arthroscopic surgery to see if I can isolate the orange/white wire. I want to leave the antenna lead intact to the radio if possible, I get good reception of local FM stations even with it inside the fender.

I'm another person who doesn't like an antenna that goes up when you turn on the CD player, that's just not necessary.

Spend an afternoon and do what I did....

Remove your head unit, get the signal wire for the antenna, route it somewhere you want it to go. Cut it in half at that point. Put a switch there to make connection if ON, no connection if off. The antenna will now only come up when the switch is flipped.

This will also double to save your antenna gears from unneccessary usage since they are extremely cheap/prone to failure in FD's.

i just did this yesterday, take the jack and all that stuff out reach back there is a connector on the back side towards the tail end, push the button on the clip and pull... done.

just for info, you have to disconnect the blue connector, not one of the others. you can also find this in the wiring manual

Another option is to replace the antenna with either a short flexible antenna or the kind that goes across the rear glass. That is if you still use FM radio but don't enjoy looking like an RC car when at full mast

Any recommendation on a good AFFORDABLE one?

I bought a flexible one from walmart for pretty cheap, I later replaced one with a glass mount by Metra Antennaworks model 44-ua200, cant remember what I paid but it wasn't bad either.
