Differential Woes
 

Whats up all. I am having a hell of a hard time finding a good complete diff. The original that came with the car whined like and an old lady. Turns out one of the pinion gear bearing races spun in the housing, but it never vibrated.
Got a replacement off ebay. Housing was cracked, got my money back. Got another one from a forum member, worm gears chipped.
He has a few, got another one everything seem good with this one. Bolted up to the car, took it for a spin, no noises but around 40mph the car develops a vibration. I thought to myself maybe is my driveshaft since its custom. Took it to a shop for balance, came back perfect, hah :scratch:
Laying under car looking for something a might of done wrong, I started to spin the diff by hand and placed a close look a the diff flange where the driveshaft bolts up. Turns out it has a slight wobble, like it was previously dropped on the flange. Its almost 1/16 in and out play. Could this be causing the darn vibration? :scratch:

You keep buying USED diffs........

Why not send the diff out to get a proper rebuild?

do you know of anyone that does this close to NJ?

The difficulty is often in finding someone that will do it.

And then the difficultly is finding someone that will do it right.

It is hard to find people who know how to do a irs 3rd member correctly. But always put in new bearings and races or at least get the races to go with the bearings when buyings a diff. That will avoid whine

do it right... do it yourself.
i built a couple nissan diffs for ls1 swaps without fancy machining tools and they are still holding 400+ lbft.

you should have enough cores to put a good one together.

I dont have any cores. I was able to return them and get a replacement. The original one cannot be fixed. The bearing race spins in the housing. I am gonna try to get a hold of the guy that sold me the last two and maybe I can get another one.
Hopefully he will comply and not turn it to a pissing match. At the same time I will try to find someone that can check it for me and possibly rebuild it.

Check if the pinion is torqued properly.

I found a drive line shop on long island that rebuild my diff. I had them put a S5 T2 diff in my FD cradle. Set it up perfectly. If you want the info, let me know.

The shop was not too far from New Hyde Park, NY (i believe).

I'd be very interested in this info as I plan to swap in a T2 diff shortly. Did you give them any special instructions?

What about the guys who bring in the low mileage JDM parts?
I've had good luck with their products.
Several of them around and usually posted in the Parts for Sale section.

If they aren't already coming in this way, see if you can get them freighted in on a pallet. You may have to pay more shipping, but it shouldn't get damaged on its way to you.

Mine off ebay was shipped rolling around with some newspaper in a box and was also damaged from freight carriers dropping this heavy piece.

No problem for me as I was just swapping the torsen into my 2nd gen 3rd member.

lucky you were able to return those others. good luck with finding a replacement.

mrmazdarx7 on ebay has a couple for sale. he's been good to me about shipping even fragile items.

The first one I bought was from mrmazda. He shipped it in a regular cardboard box, lol. The other two were shipped in crates. I am pretty sure is just the way the get them in the containers, who knows if they brace them.
I am gonna try my luck and just buy a new companion flange and swap it out. With luck the pinion gear itself is not bent.

If you are going to continue looking at used differentials, I would either try Fritz Flynn or Japan2LA. Both handle/receive FD components all the time.
