Different 5th gear ratio?

So, I've been thinking about this.

Going to 4.30 rear gears would be really cool. Better acceleration, etc. But, you're starting to bring the RPM up in 5th gear making for fairly obnoxious interstate cruising.

It also doesn't help having a JDM trans (which I do) where the 5th gear is different, bringing the RPM's up in 5th.

I'm wondering if there's an alternative 5th gear that could be swapped in. DGeesaman, you might know something here - what all would be required parts-wise to change that gear ratio? I know there's at least 2 gears that would be different, don't know if the synchros and stuff would also be different.

Of course, it's also assuming that going to the 4:30's would be worth it in acceleration. If it's a minor change it wouldn't be worth the headache.

Any thoughts here?

Probably easier to just sell the JDM trans and get a good USDM one. Then install the 4.30 diff.

I changed to a 4.44 and didn't notice much of a change on the highway...

I still have a USDM tranny..

Acceleration out the hole is allot better though...:egrin:

the US one is the obvious choice, the only difference is/are the two gears, same syncho's and stuff

there may be other gears, the B2600, T2, 929, mpv all used the same trans.... off the top the JDM 5th and the B2600 are the same one, but its been a while

Not sure what the yankee ratio was for fifth, but the JDM cars had two options for fifth gear:

.806 (JDM FD's with 4.1:1 diffs)

.762 (JDM FD's with 4.3:1 diffs)

This was how it was for any JDM FD from 1991 to 2002.

How can you figure out which version you have?
