Man the RX7Club sever sucks, heres the orignal question...
What's the different things in the model years, i heard the 94+ door latches are different (better) what are the other small things to look for? My friend is looking at a 95 and wants to make sure it's a 95. What part of the VIN. number has the year in it? Thanks in advance for the replys, Nick |
This one tells of some of the differences in the models...
http://7sins.rx7life.com/ This one deciphers the VIN for you... http://personal.cfw.com/~rinaca/thirdgen.html |
Thanks a lot man,
Nick |
im just gonna bump this because im also trying to find this info. what are the differences between a 95 vs 93 or 94. engine harness different?? ect... any help would be appreciated!!
|
95 has different shock tower construction, smaller abs pump with a metal shield instead of an aluminum one and has r134a refrigerant in the ac system.
I am sure there are some more differences but those are the major ones. |
Gotcha. I heard there is a difference between the engine harness? Of maybe just the 95 motor vs 93. Any one have a link for information like this?
|
Check the FAQ thread under "Buying":

the basic body is the same from the start (12/21/1991), to the end. the JDM cars have a hole in the fender for a side marker light. the EU cars get a different license plate/rear fog light. the rear wing and taillights change in 96. in 1999, the car gets a new front bumper, air dam and rear wing. the basic engine is the same from 92-98, in 99 they updated the rotor housings with a different sized metering orifice. after 2003 the engines got 2 piece apex seals instead of 3. the shit on top of the engine; US 93-94 cars had EGR, the 95, and non US cars do not. the 95 cars have the fan recall, and fuel system recalls done at the factory. the turbos get a minor update (stamped N3C1). in 96 the IC plumbing gets a bolt on flange(efini Y pipe), the intake gaskets are metal, and they get a "black box" instead of the solenoid rack. in 99 the ic plumbing gets revised again. the 99+ cars have a second engine choice, the 280hp engine has better turbos (N3G1), different ecu, and a couple of other things. the transmission is the same 92-2003, except for the 5th gear which varies depending on market and wheel size. rear diff is the same, except the 96+ 17" wheel cars get a 4.30, instead of 4.1 ratio (at gets 3.9) the suspension is updated in 94, with new front spindles that allow more castor and camber. the front upper arms get different bushings and the rear subframe adds a couple of braces. in 99 they add larger brakes to the 280hp models. the spring/shock combos change with year/model in 94 the LHD interior gets a passenger airbag, and the tan/red interiors get all black panels except the seats and carpet (well there is a little more). the interior panels get a textured plastic instead of the smooth coated stuff. the tach/speedo get lines every 500rpm, instead of every 250, or whatever it was. in 95 the shift knob looses its perforations, the AC gets R134. about your specific questions, the bose tube came on the touring models, which are very very rare in 1995, although the bose tube was available until 1998 in Japan. the fog lights came on the touring and i think the PEP package. |
Wow that's more like.it! Thank you!
Il being told that bose was not a option at all on the 95 pep. Also the engine harness between the 93vs95 the same? All same connectors and junk or is there maybe different solenoids/connectors. Is it a swapable harness between the 2 motors? I'm asking because I read that there is a difference between the apexi pfc depending on the Model year. |
for the vin. there are three kinds.
in Japan, the vin tag says FD3S-100001 or more for 10/91-6/93 FD3S-200001 or more for 7/93-6/94 FD3S-300001 or more for 7/94-12/95 FD3S-400001 or more for 12/95-12/98 FD3S-500001 or more for 12/98-9/2000 FD3S-600001 or more for 9/2000 until the end. a US vin says JM1FD3312P02003810 J = built in Japan, W is Germany, etc M1 = Mazda FD = FD3S chassis, the Rx8 is FE, etc 33 = usually this is coupe/sedan/convertible, for instance the FC vert is a 35, and the coupe is 33 1 = restraint system, 1 is a single airbag, the 94-95's have a 2 here 2 = check digit, apparently the feds have some calculation they make to come up with this number, so they can tell if its fake or not. P = year. P =93, R=94 S =95. after they get to Z, they use a number here. 0 = assembly plant, 0 is Hiroshima, 1 is Hofu, and 5 is flat rock, every rotary car was built in Hiroshima. 2 = year/series, 2 is 93, 3 is 94, 4 is 95 003810 = chassis number. these cars were built on the same assembly line as the protege/323/626 etc, and it seems that they were built in batches. a higher vin = newer car, but they did not come out of the factory in strict sequential order, it seems that they would build 2-3 of a color, and then 2-3 of another color. Europe's vin is like the US except it starts with JMZ. it is hard to verify, but it appears that it is possible that there is a JM1FD3312P02003810, JMZFD3312P02003810 and an FD3S-2003810, three different cars, but share the same # |
US option packages;
93 model has three, base, R1 and touring. the R1 is MT only, non sunroof. it has two oil coolers, a front strut bar, that is adjustable. it also got a rear wing, and front arid dam. in the interior, it got special "suede like" seats. no cruise control, no CD player. it got stiffer shocks. the sticker in the passengers door jamb should say FD03, hard suspension. it was only available in red, black and yellow. the touring has a sunroof, rear wiper, the bose tube, am/fm/cd. leather seats, cruise control, and fog lights. the base has no sunroof, but it had cruise control. no rear wiper. leather and CD were options. in 1994 there is a 4th option added, yellow is dropped for white. the R2 is like the R1, except yellow is replaced with silver. the front strut bar is not adjustable. shocks get re-valved. the touring gets a glass moonroof. the base is the same, except that leather, cd and a sunroof are an option package. called the Popular Equipment Package (PEP). 1995 is the same, except that the R2 and touring are extremely rare. the PEP has fog-lights added. there were also a number of accessories, such as the rear wing, and CD player. the R1/R2's came with the airdam in the trunk and it was common that it went into the mechanics tool box instead of getting installed. |
Also my Vin is jm1fd333... You say that last number is 1- driver air bag, 2- dual front airbags. What about the number 3?

I'm asking because I read that there is a difference between the apexi pfc depending on the Model year. all the LHD cars have the same engine harness. the ECU gets updated in 1996, and then again in 1998, the US spec cars all use the same PFC |
