difference in down pipes?
Is there a difference between a name brand DP and non name brand DP's?
Would it be a bad decision to get something like http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-93-...83796015QQrdZ1 or spend more money for a name brand one? thanks |
big name companies got to be big name companies by introducing quality products

I hose is a hose...
but people have complained about the flanges on the cheap peices... they don't seem to line up well sometimes... I think it is hit or miss... Buying the best of everything gets expensive... sometimes a cheap eBay peice can free up money to use elsewhere... someplace where you wouldn't want to risk using a cheap part |
Some people have reported fitment problems with the flanges on some of the 'cheap' pipes. Others have not had a problem. The worse case scenario is that you take the car to an exhaust shop who does some grinding on the flange for a better fit.
Having said that, I've been using the Bonez downpipes (www.rx7.com) and generally recommend them. They are more expensive but the fit is good. |
Get the best of both worlds - buy a used name-brand downpipe :). I bought a Bonez one some time back for $40 on Ebay - NO ONE ELSE bid on it because it was rusty. Had it ceramic coated, looks like a million bucks.
That said, the cheap Ebay downpipes are pot luck. I had one on my car that fit OK, but the angle of the rear flange was a little off, making for a very small exhaust leak. For the exhaust system to be nice and tight, each flange needs to line up with the other perfectly. I'd just keep an eye out for a good used one - they come up pretty frequently here on the forum and on Ebay. Dale |
To show how hit or miss they are, I bought a used RB intake duct, K&N filter, & metal intake pipes from a local RX7 owner. He told me they were ebay pipes & the one didn't fit, I was aware of it. So the one fit great... & the other was WAY off... there was NO way it would go on the car... it was a bad, cheap eBay part.
I also have an eBay DP & it fits fine... |
I had the same results as Dale with my DP, rear flange didn't meet up and it created an exhaust leak. I didn't buy the DP from Ebay either (won't mention company publicly). I fixed the problem, but quality and reputation does make a difference.

The Bonez pipe is very well made. Roll the dice on ebay stuff. Make sure you get stainless steel.

I had an HKS on my last car I loved it. But it is true that because it is made for JDM cars with the crease it does restric flow a bit.
On a related question anyone ever heard of the Trust downpipe? It is supposedly 80mm where are the HKS is 75mm. Thanks, Alex |
Someone awhile ago posted a Greddy DP for sale in the FS section. I don't think anyone (including the seller) could verify whether or not it was truly a Greddy pipe. You might try seaching that section and see if you can find that post.

need a downpipe? LOL ;)
I got a "petit" downpipe... But it was much too loud for my taste. I just had it replaced with a high flow magnaflow cat and the sound is a lot better IMHO. Depending on where you go some "bolt-ons" aren't really "bolt-ons". My bolt-on cat was too long... ~CYD |

The downpipe I am talking about is actually listed on the TRUST site in Japan. I saw the product on rhdjapan.com.
http://www.trust-power.com/01exhaust/tr_frontpipe.html It says: "TR front pipe (competition exclusive use) " "It is the competition private front pipe which can expect the substantial power rise of the extent where re-setting of burning pitch becomes necessary. Because as for one for FD3S boost pressure rises substantially, re-setting of the computer is needed. GC8 because it becomes with the catalyst less, shows power at the time of limited travelling with closed course." "Rx-7/E-FD3S/99.11~02.8/13B-REW/80mm/28350" Right now I am getting a downpipe locally for cheap. But if it doesn't fit well I think this means if I want to try this product I will have to be the guinea pig. The link from RHDJapan is: https://www.rhdjapan.com/home/produc...roduct_id=1706 |
