diff needs a rebuild

Anyone have their diff rebuilt? I am curious as to the price. I'd replace it but I have a 4.31 and it wasnt shimmed right I think.

COsborne Aug 22, 2003 12:40 AM

actually it is the rear end that needs the rebuild... not the actually diff. anyone know a good source besides mazda/mazdacomp for bearings and which bearings I should buy ahead of time...

TailHappy Aug 22, 2003 08:22 AM

I'm interested in seeing your responses as I'm sitting on a destroyed diff too.....

As far as parts, I think your 2 best bets are Mazdacomp and Malloy Mazda.

vosko Aug 22, 2003 09:54 AM

what is wrong with it ?

i blew one diff it exploded all the gears on the torsen. if you did that you need buy a whole new diff

COsborne Aug 22, 2003 10:46 AM

I just need new bearings... its whining

areXseven Aug 22, 2003 11:42 AM

I installed a set of 4:11's on my 69 Camaro when I was pretty young. I didn't shim them right and ruined them. They could hear me coming a mile away (whining). I bought another set and had a shop put them in.

Once they start whining, irreversable damage is being done. You might (hopefully not) need to replace the gears. Have you had a mechanic look at it??

COsborne Aug 22, 2003 12:05 PM

nope, not yet. I havent even pulled it yet.

vosko Aug 22, 2003 12:14 PM

i am running stock 4.10 gears . never had a problem with them...

areXseven Aug 22, 2003 12:29 PM

I would take it straight to a shop and have them look at it. HOPEfully they just need to be shimmed properly, and not to much damage has been done. Good Luck!!

vosko:

Are you running 4.10's on your FD? If so, what rpm do you mark at 70mph (highway driving). Thanks.

COsborne Aug 22, 2003 12:50 PM

right, well that leads me back to the point of the post... how much it will cost me

areXseven Aug 22, 2003 01:01 PM

Wish I knew the cost. Best bet is to just call a shop for an estimate.

COsborne Aug 22, 2003 01:07 PM

I'll probably do it myself anyway. I'll just call mazda and see what they quote for parts.

areXseven Aug 22, 2003 01:54 PM

How did the car perform with the 4.31's?? How high were the rpm's at highway speeds?. I was thinking of changing my 3.90 gears and going with a lower gear ratio. It should improve my 1/4 time.

COsborne Aug 22, 2003 02:33 PM

I dont know. I bought the car with the 4.31 and it whined when I got it too.

65mph is around 2500rpm BUT i am running much bigger rear tires. 275/40/17 so my speedometer is probably off 2-5 mph

Mine is in the neighborhood of 3000rpm, +/-100rpm...I think

vosko Aug 22, 2003 04:10 PM

oops 2500rpm is 60MPH.... 65 is like 2700 rpm like ISU said... oops

poss Aug 22, 2003 10:02 PM

I tested it tonight.
70mph indicated is around 2700rpm, although I am pretty sure that my speedo reads about 5mph at that speed.

areXseven Aug 23, 2003 07:52 AM

So what are you guys running in the 1/4 mile??

vosko Aug 23, 2003 09:07 AM

COsborne Aug 23, 2003 10:29 AM

vosko Aug 23, 2003 10:40 AM
