Did the 3rd gen ever have factory keyless entry?
 
Just wondering, since a few other Mazdas did during 93-95.

Nope. JT Imports did have a JDM keyless entry option that I believe was a dealer add-on for the last RX-7's (like 99+). I've never heard of someone who bought that kit, as it was like $500 or something nuts. Not to mention there's no guarantee if it would actually work on a USDM left-hand drive car, and on an older RX-7 as well.

I just installed keyless entry on my car today - writeup coming soon. I did it the VERY hard way, though :). Long story - wait for the writeup.

The Aus spec cars did (RHD)
Can't see why the steering wheel position would affect the doors, so maybe source some second hand units from Australia?

The problem is the way the stock power locks work. Stock, the passenger door has a motor to move the lock, and it just copies the state of the driver's side lock. Since the drivers and passenger sides are swapped LHD to RHD, if the keyless entry kit came with a motor to actuate the driver's lock, it possibly wouldn't fit a LHD car - the part would have to be a mirror image. Again, very possible that it WOULD fit, but it wasn't worth the $500 gamble for someone to find out.

Ahh. Thats weird that it didn't have keyless entry since lesser cars like the MX6 did.

My guess would be that they were going with the racecar design strategy and it was just unneeded weight. Granted, not much, but every little bit counts.

Yeah it was just the Japanese version, not the US version.

I agree with DALECLARK, its some coin for the original. I personally would just buy one of the aftermarket ones in the US with and get their actuators or a door actuator from Japan somehow.

Ive been looking for something definitive on a keyless entry install for the FD. Picked up a DEI Python 440hp about a year ago and got the actuator installed on the driver door. That was a major pain in the ass. Tried a number of different positions as well as various bends on the actuator control rod to get the device to push and pull the lock closed. Since I had a number of unanswered questions on the install, the use of diodes, and issues relating to the oem alarm, I decided to put the project on the back burner. Isnt there an issue regarding the factory alarm still being active despite having the keyless entry unlock the door. There was also reference to the pulse signal and a disclaimer saying that you can fry your ecu.

Chuck, I have a DEI alarm (Viper) that I got solely for keyless entry and window module. All I needed was an actuator. $25 actuator, at that. Works FLAWLESSLY. Install wasn't hard either. Works keyless or with a key. As for disabling the factory alarm, there's a factory alarm disable wire that you gotta get to ;) It's in the driver side kickpanel (on the left), and I THINK the wire is green. I can't remember.

I know a lot of you guys like doing stuff yourselves, but when it comes to this kinda stuff, I just found a guy who had been doing alarm installs for YEARS, and happened to own a 3rd gen (so he wouldn't butcher my door panel clips etc). He had no problems w/ the install (I was working w/ him on it). So it definitely works. And no $500 module is necessary. Experience is worth every penny IMO, cuz it saves you a huge headache and you get it right the first time.

I still do not understand why ppl are are so hung up on the 99spec alarm module & keyless entry. I mean that thing is EXPENSIVE for nothing. You can do it for a LOT cheaper. In fact, here's the part number for the DEI compact door lock actuator: (A)524N. Oh and I lied. It's not $25. It's $24.99 :p:

PS: Cody, it wouldn't hurt to search ;) This question's been asked several times. There are maybe 25 or so threads about it in the proper section (interior/exterior/audio). Forum's been around since '96, and archive goes back to Feb. '01. Chances are, someone's had the same question/concern you have, so give that good old search button a chance :)

Hey Dale, you are using the jspec passenger door lock motor ie US driverside correct?

Wondering it you actuated the system through the stock driverside switch wiring (before accessing the doorharness), and tapped the motor into the existing switch wiring and Yed into the stock pass motor wiring?

From what I can tell, this should work, and would require no extra pins for the driverside doorharness to integrate into the system cleanly.

can anyone post a pic of what the actuator setup looks like on the drivers door?

I just installed an alarm in my fd3s today (RHD) but am a bit boggled by how to hook up the actuator to drive the lock.
