Dealership says no compresion

My local dealership says I have no compresion. First off I have a 1993 tt automatic. When I turn the Ign. over It sounds like it wants to crank but doesnt. I checked the oil and it was good except it smelled a little like gas. When you try to crank it-it smells like strong gas(flooded to me). What do you think and what should I try first before replacing engine? Also any small rebuild shops near savannah Ga. I can ship to reasonably priced?
Thanks a million,
Joe

well it's flooded

reason could be compression or about 100 other things

unflood it then try it

that doesnt' work then take a compression check youself.

there are threads on how to do these things.

Don't go by what the dealer says. They only have "ONE" answer and it's replace engine. They put too much oil in mine on a routine oil change and wanted me to buy a new engine before I left.

Did they show you compression readings? You need to go to 2 or 3 shops for another opinion. Check the east coast section for locations. Pettit in Florida, Rotorsportsracing in NC, acn't remember what else.

Hey Joe,

Why don't you mention how it all started? If it is your compression it obviously didn't work fine one day and the next day it just didn't start.
Did you have problems while driving?
Have you been over boosting?
Is this the original motor?
How many miles on it?
Have you ever had this happen before?
Was it ever difficult to start prior to this...etc?
I don't mean to sound pecimistic but if the dealership said you have no compression it is probably do. Did you actually take it to a dealership via tow truck, or did they just suggest this over the phone?
You can also search on this forum and there are may threads on how to unflood your car.
If I remember correctly you depress the gas all the way first then try to crank your engine (easiest way). Please do a search before you try to make sure I am right. Also someone who reads this let me know if I'm right or wrong.

Good luck with everything and look on the bright side. If it is a blon motor you can get a "new" ported motor! =)

i think you'll at least have to come to atlanta for some quality work to be done

PM me if you can pull the motor yourself

Im sorry for the non-description. Car has 114,000 miles on second motor from previous owner. Car was driveing fine on a 30 min. trip average 65-70 mph and when I slowed down to get on off ramp it lost most of its power then it picked up normal speed and power for about 5 more miles till I came to a turn as I turned it just shut off and would not start back up. I then had AAA tow it to the dealer where it took 3 weeks for them to look at it. They gave me no compression readings just charged me 65.00 to tell me I needed a motor. Any help is much appreciated.

Motor is all stock for now.

GoRacer 03-22-04 11:51 PM

Sounds like they had no clue what to do! When that happens, they tell you to replace the motor because they assume the problem will go away but only the block is replaced so if the problem is elsewhere they will just keep replacing parts and fix nothing. The fact that they charged you the min one hours labor to make it look like they did something and get paid tells me they did not do a compression check because they did not give you the numbers on your receipt. I think you paid for the mechanic to scratch his butt.

I think you are probly correct about that. I dont feel they did anything ether.
