CYM project update
 

It's been a while and nothing has happened. I snapped some shots today, the donor front end is prepped and ready for welding. The car is going on the frame rack this weekend and should be getting welded up next week.

Look at the small flanges that are only held together with spot welds. If you know much about welding it is easy to see that the car will be as strong or stronger than it originally was.

Paint should be done by the end of August. If I get it put back together before the end of September I'll be at Seven Stock with this car!

I will actually get to see your work first hand in a couple of weeks. I am going to check out ArchangelX's car on Oahu. How bad was his to start with. Sorry to get off topic.

poor CYM :( i can't stand to see her like that. Looks like alot of work ahead, keep us posted dude. I'll be at sevenstock with my CYM, hope to see you there.

He just wanted a rebuild, port, etc from Pineapple, his original motor had 98K miles on it and was still running fine. He actually drove his car 4 hrs to my house. It is a pretty nice FD.

I'm keeping it and selling my VR R1. I'd never hear the end of this repair if I tried to sell it here...

It seems people think this type of repair weakens the cars struture, I'm just trying to illustrate how cars aren't really put together that well. The only thing that holds them together is a bunch of spot welds, if you reweld the car in the factory spots then it'll be just as strong as before. The problem comes from cheesy repairs like the original repair work. That was dangerous.

I'll echo it once more too:

Modern UB cars are NOT solid pieces of metal or solid one-piece frames!!

People don't always remember that cars are built up from parts, not divine intervention. They'd be apalled to find out how many chunks of metal are welded together in order to make a chassis. The key is just as you said: doing it right. There's no reason you can't return a car to factory condition but most people aren't willing to spend the time and effort to do it right.

Is the front end for the car a new part. or a junkyard part?

It's funny how it all actually looks pretty simple when you look at just the unibody, but when you consider the TONS of wiring, brackets, piping, etc. that's bolted to the unibody that you have to pull to do the work, that's the tricky part. A body shop doing this sort of work probably wouldn't get the same result, since they aren't as familiar with how to properly remove and re-install all the systems on an RX-7.

Anyhow, kudos and keep up the good work!
