Custom SMIC

I just lost a bid on ebay for a Greddy SMIC.. and I'm pissed.. I'm not ready to pay $1,300 for a new one either especially with such a poor shroud..

So I had an idea

take one of these ebay special cores:

and make your SMIC similar to the PFS core

I had the HKS hard pipes.. and I even think u could re-use the hot pipe,
just turn it sideways *90 and mate it to the end tank...

like the lower one in this pic:

and just make a new cold pipe with a Greddy elbow to reduce the bend..

and a duct..

Wham bam thank you mam..

core size comparison:

PFS: 3.5x10.4x10.5 = 382 in^3
Greddy: 4x12.5x7.5 = 375 in^3
Ebay: 3.25x15x10= 487.5 in^3

what do you guys think?

You can do anything you want. I wouldn't use the hard pipes. Just order up some intercooler piping on ebay and weld it up. You'll have a bigger selection to select from and you wont have the rough cast area inside. The most important detail to a smic setup is proper ducting. Without it you'll just be baking it in the engine bay...

hardest part i think is getting a duct to fit the core, unless you are savy enough to make one yourself outa fiberglass or something

I purchased and bench tested an xs power brand ebay core and it worked fine. It was as good or within a few percent of a very high quality core for its cooling efficiency in heat transfer tests and it also flowed well. So I decided to use it.

I am enamored with results, not branding. That being said, there are many instances where you only get what you pay for. And sometimes you can get a bargain, which seems to be the case here; some of these cores are pretty good deals.

For the price, it's hard to go wrong--if it doesn't work out, you can throw it away and still afford to get something else.

I don't see those XS power intercoolers for sale on ebay any longer..

did the company die out?

The PFS uses Spearco core #2-172. It is a badass core:

Depth: 3.5"
Width: 10.40"
Height: 10.50"
Core Volume: 382.20 cu in
Max HP: 675
CFM: 1010

The ASP Medium uses Spearco core #2-180. I researched this a long time ago when I was building my own SMIC. I bought the PFS core for about $300.
