Crap gas in OK
Well, I just moved to Enid, OK( 3800lb FD) and there is NO good gas in this town!! See attached pic. Is this some sick midwest joke? My car is tuned on 93 and it doesnt like the 91 at all, I get crazy knock readings over 5k and in boost.
https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...postid=2722853 I have gone to the extreme of getting 5 gallons of 100LL Avgas per tank to get the octane high enough so my engine doesnt blow up while I'm out here. Is this standard for the midwest or just some odd thing in Enid? Is there any good gas out here? Jon '93 TGM base |
Gas is gettin worse and worse....and the price is going up and up...2.35 a gallen here.. =,(
|
LOL
That's funny, the 100 octane low-lead Avgas was only $2.21 a gallon!!!! Weird. Jon |
I am in Southern California. 91 is the best available, so I use a gallon of the Toulene or Xylene with every fill up. 10 gallons of gas to one of X or T brings me up to about 93.5 octane.
|
Can that (xylene/toulene) mess up any of the fuel lines/injector O-rings/FPR/FPD???
Just wondering, should be cheaper than the Avgas and not so much of a hassle Jon |
91 octane is fine.
|
91 octane is fine Jon..you just moved to hell. |
Don't turn up the boost on the 91.
|
Welcome to Oklahoma! ECK!!
We have 93 at Sinclair gas stations. That's the only place I've seen so far. |
it's $1.73 here for 93 octane
|
The best I've seen in my city is 92.5 octane. (wtf :P) Otherwise, most places are only 91-92.
|
don't complain... 91 is the highest we get in CA and it's $2.20+/gal
|
when i was in cali, all i could find was 91 octane, use xylene or tolune to boost octane a bit for a bandaid fix, what out for spills on paint though...
|
just paid 1.66 for 93 octane...you guys got it bad
|
At least you guys have a good selection of the lower octanes. For most its regular, plus, and premium only. You guys have five choices. Just trying to point out the bright side, if there is one.
|
$1.79 for 94 octane
Why didn't you get some tolean paint thinker? Mike |

You may find that it is right for your car. |
You could get water injection installed as a safety precaution. I would just turn the boost down or tune the timing back and deal with the lower octane.
|
91 only in AZ $2.10 gallon and going up. You can get 101 octane at one gas station in Tucson for $4.79 a gallon:eek:
|
wtf thats cheap
here i pay 1.69 for 87 !!! |
You'll just have to retune for lower octane :(. Ironically some of the biggest tuners are out here in Cali where the highest normally available is 91, although there are 76 stations around that sell 100 unleaded for $5/gal.

Yeah, how would I know what I'm talking about? That was just something ignorant to post, somebody take his keyboard from him and put him in time out. Octane need is a function of compression, boost and timing among other factors. Of course I could tune back my car. I could reduce the timing advance and it would be happy on the 91. I didnt pay good money to have my car tuned to have to run it nuderded. Thanks to everyone else to actual helpful posts and welcomed comments on this interesting state. |
Fitzrx7,
Welcome you are an hour away from Okc and should head this way one weekend to meet up with the other FD owners. As for the 91 octane dilemna I think thats just in Enid. I have 3 x 93octane stations within 2miles of my house and one has 101. |
the NE is known for 93 being common and 94 at sunoco.
I would check your local sunoco and see what their "Super" gasoline rating is...probably 93 in that case. |
take it easy.........
just turn you boost down until you tune for 91. They do have 93 in the midwest. You just have to find the right store. 2 octane shouldn't make a huge diff. If it did that would worry me more than the gas. To me that tells me my engine is walking a thin line. hell, i've ran 89 for over a year. Some times all you get is 87/89 choice. yes for turbos the higher the better but reality dictates otherwise sometimes. |
On Tuesdays I can get 93 for $1.58 or so. Any other time it is aroun $1.78-$1.80
|
whats up big jon its your best rx-7 friend yanni :) Id say turn your boost down a couple psi for now or take out a lot of timing and find a station with 93
I was talking with an engine builder and he said he was running 16psi on 93 and turned it to 17 and then pop. This is a pro so id imagine you dont want to be higher than 12 on the 91 at HIGHEST. Maybe even go to 10 for now which will feel like shit im sure. But hey I ran 7psi on my last car with the non seq twins and the silencers in for a few months. Now THAT feels like shit. If I can do it so can you. Glad we got to chill before you left good luck with your life there bro. |
FitzRX7: Talk about a flashback. I worked at the Enid News and Eagle back in 1981-85 as a news photographer. It was a rocking town during the oil boom. I assume you must be doing pilot training at Vance? I can't believe the USAF is still flying the Tweet. They were old when I was there. LOL. Fun airplane, though.
Relative to fuel, yes, Enid is out of the way. Look for either Phillips (refined in Bartlesville) or Amoco. Both good quality gas. Conoco is refined in Ponca City. The distribution companies pretty much dictate what's available. If the dealers don't sell enough 93, they won't ship it. There are so few high performance cars around anymore, an island like Enid isn't likely to get any. By the way, auto racing is a big deal in Oklahoma. As I recall there was a station there in a relatively seedy side of town that catered to Saturday evening racers. They sold something that was 94+, as I recall. It was an independent dealer. Look around. Study hard - the washout rate is phenomenal. And if you get into a T-38 someday, watch the power bleed off on landing. That thing has no wings and drops like a rock the second you get below the curve. I made a photograph of one sitting in a guy's livingroom - what was left of it. Let us know how you are doing. |
It's over $2.60 here in Redlands/Highland area. It friekin sucks ass, kinda glad I'm not driving my FD too. Seems like they're adding more bs to the gas here too, it doesn't last as long and runs like shit! I hate california car wise, any other state would be way better to have a car in but its fun to live in california! It's a real shitty trade off.

You tuned your car for the gas you had available. We tune our cars for 91. Do you get that? 91 is fine. If you're going to be in a 91 area, tune your fucking car. I'm far from an ignorant board member on here. It's not the gas. I understand the concept of octane and it's relevance to resistance to burn. However, unless you're pushing serious boost on the street, 91 octane is going to be fine. We use it out here in California every day, 365 days of the year. |
You guy's have it easy down there. Here in Edmonton, Canada the price for premium gas at 91 octane is $0.83 per litre. I wish our gas was as cheap as yours. The ironic part is that we make the gas ship it to you guy's and then you ship it back to us for a profit. Thats crazy.
R.K. |
Take a ride over to Gotham Racing and have Steve tune it for the lower octane :)
|
tuning isnt that hard and steve kan isnt a freakin genious for being able to handle a pfc. Jon knows how to tune his car fine he doesnt need to drive no where although hes put just a few miles on his car so he musta had to drive somewhere or wanted to
