Cover for Passenger Rear Fender Well
 

I just bought a '93 touring with some fire damage to repair caused by a rotten muffler. After clean-up of the passenger rear fender area that there was quite a bit of rust back where the tire would throw rocks. This did't look like fire damage caused rust as the undercoat was melted away back to steel in places. Also, when you look behind the tire, the muffler heat shield is in view.

Was the car designed with a plastic shield in that area that fell away some time ago? Or, is this just the way it is designed? I can't see any plastic cover shown in the factory manual, but that is not a well documented location.

No, there isn't a full wheelwell liner on the passenger side like there is on the driver's side. You're not missing anything. I suppose they wanted air to get in there to cool things off. You had an unfortunate way of finding out the need for that.

Thanks for the information about the fender detail. It does make sense to keep as much air flowing around that muffler as possible.
