copying remapped ecu chip
 

ok guys, i was talking to a guy i keep telling to buy a pettit or M2 ecu because of his mod.

He said that it wasn't worth it, that he will try to find one and copy the chip. All the honda guys can do it.

I was trying to tell him that it wouldn't work and then i realised i had no argument.

Can it be done? If not, why not. Is there anything else that M2, Pettit or G-force do in the Ecu that we can't do?

Oh and i am talking only on a technical point, not a moral point...

You can do it, it takes an EE-prom(sp?) burner that can except chips with that many pins and that size. I used to work with a guy who had one. The Only main problem is that it cost a little bit.

c00lduke is correct. With a burner and computer you can make copies of any prom that it supports.

But the question is how do you modify the ECU so that you can install the new chip? Is it just (carefully) unsolder the old chip and solder in the appropriate socket?

Anyone have internal pictures of a stock vs modified factory ECU?

I'm not sure of this (never cracked open my ECU), but I think the Pettit/M2 chips use a daughter board to plug into the stock chip slot.

It will have most of the same information.

the pettit does use a daughter board and they grind off the numbers off the logic chips they use so no you can not effectively copy the pettit ecu. You would need to know the numbers for all of the components, as well as be able to read and program the main two chips they supply.

Don't be a tightass. Pay people for the work they do. If you copy other people's work you'll find out no one will make new parts for FDs anymore.

I doubt that copying anyones ecu would be optimal for your car and mods. even if you had the same mods, it would not be the same

that is why i was talking about a technical point of view, not a moral point of view.

I personnally wouldn't do it, and even if i was bad enough to do this, i wouldn't want to take the chance to be the first one to try it.

anyone else has a good answer? not everyone seems to think the same thing...
