Cooling upgrades... help !!
 

guys this is my senario.. my JDM 98 FD is back home in bangaldesh.. even though i go there in the winter but its still not that cold and sometimes i do like to drive around in the afternoon.. just cruising...

things i have listed for the for cooling upgrades some i will be able to take back this holidays.. some next holidays


out of these

1. koyo aluminum radiator is going -- pls suggest any thing else that might be better around the same price

2. SMIC-- i need to know the differences of each of the brand i am sure there are some pros and cons of each brand.. but someone suggested that tube and fin design is much better than bar and plate.. didnt say why but that is what he has suggested i guess all the smic's are bar plate.. what are the differences ??

3. custom cold air intake i will build with all the required thermal barriers..

4. cooling bonnet i wont be able to afford now BUT WOULD STILL ASK WHICH IS BEST FOR COOLING I DONT WANT OR NEED ANY SHOW... COOLING FIRST THEN ALL .. what i was thinking was raising the bonnet about 1-2 inches near the windshield to let the heat out.. as i have done with my trueno...

5. i already have twin oil coolers.. but another factor is the car even though 98 model but still has its age.. and i know there are some valves at the entry of the coolers.. how can i check if they are still working or not... i mean i will install a temp gauge... but what are the stock.. temps can anyone help on this please???

6. i know asking this question might be stupid but even.. 1-2 deg lower temps would mean a lot to me.. does the aftermarket vented headlight covers help in anyway..?? does the air really get through or just hits the light chassis and gets diverted else where???




GUYS ALL OF YOUR RESPONSED WOULD MEAN A LOT..SO THANKS IN ADVANCE

1-You cant go wrong with Koyo or Fuidyne, each has their own cons, but easily corrected

2-Most Small SMIC's are good enough for stock twins at 14psi or less.
The larger SMIC's like the Large Pettit SMIC, works really good even for single turbos. It is the same design as the M2 SMIC's

3-This is good, anyway to block the turbos from sucking in hot engine bay temps is always a good idea

4-Almost any vented hood will help with cooling. As for putting spacers on the hood hinges to help vent heat, myself and some friends notice that there is a decent amount of lowered underhood temps, but a vented hood works better.

5-to test the Oil coolers' bypass valve, you can look in the FSM. i dont know off hand. these dont really go bad, but when they do, they are a bit expensive

6-the vented headlight cover does not work.... its an old style design. While it may have worked for older cars with flip-up headlights, it does nothing on the FDs. All intake kits, even stock, are positioned directly next to it.... so no air would be getting to it anyway..... if you want a good way to get a cold air intake without spending a lot of money, check out the Even Cheaper Bastard intake mod

FC Thermoswitch
 

How about replacing the Fan Thermoswitch with the FC part (97°C switch)? Mazda's part number is PN41-18-840. The stock FD thermoswitch triggers at 107°C... too high according to the wisdom on this forum.

guys there is this other thing i would like to ask.. i am running a knightsports highflow cat. is it safe to remove if i port the wastegate.... and how hard is it to port the wastegate ??? i mean do i need to buy or make new flaps.. help on this would be much appreciated

Water temp gauge.

Even though that will not make your engine run cooler , with this gauge you'll know exactly how hot it runs and if something fails (cooling fan for instance) you'll notice it straight away.

I was a bit turned off by installing them but it wasn't really hard, just time consuming...

Also the FAQ are generally very much oriented toward making the FD runs a bit cooler as it is one of it's weakness (easily fixable though).

if you port the wastegate, it SHOULD be safe to remove the high-flow cat, no promises, monitor boost like a hawk in colder temps.

yea bro these thing are already on the list temp gauges and all..

the thing is there is only 2 fds in the whole of bangladesh.. so yea there is no real tuner there i have to do it all by my self going through it all.. so yea... you guys are my best help... cause i have spoken to people here in sydney (place where i study) specially RIC SHAW.. he is a good bloke.. has educated me a lot but at the end of the day i guess he is running a business and i am only student now.. so all money i earn doing part time jobs goes straight to either my FD3S or my Trueno ( hope fully will turbo charge this.. this year )

lets see how things go got my fingers crossed on the fd as this is my first rotary.. but i am up on it for the long haul first cause its a celebrity amongst the car scene in Bangladesh, secondly taxes on recon cars are over 300% and also there is a 6 year ban.. so i will never be able to buy a FD in the first place.. let alone afford something close to that... and evos sti's rx8s and whole lot other cars are out there...

but there is something about a FD that is worth the while going through.... I just call it the Japanese Samurai

You'll find a lot of directions from this forum if you want to install the gauges, I found this is the mod that does not cost much $$ (you don't need the fancy gauges) mainly time.

You have a Trueno too? Sounds like an Initial D fan to me... :o) How about putting an F20C engine in it instead of a turbo?!?!?!

Alot of what you are asking for and mentioned has been spoken about to death on the forum already. I think some of these things will help...

-AI for intake cooling, robustness and longevity
-fan on your SMIC would help if you get stuck in traffic
-changing your coolant mixture
-r magic oil cooler ducts

nice stuff on the gauges , and yea man initial d fan for a long while now... even though i have a AE-92 trueno not a AE86.....

i will keep you all posted on my results lets just hope for the best...

If you really want to get squirly you can do some ceramic coating, looks great and helps keep things cool.

Unless you're racing the stock oil coolers are fine, as far as temp readings a lot of people tap into the oil pan for temp readings.

Then you have DEI products, high temp tape, cable wraps, heat reflective tape, etc.

guys i already spoke to this guy here in australia, he custom makes coolers so will be getting something like the pettit ... custom made, also with custom ducting......

what happens to the black diverter or box that stay in front of the intake box and stock intercooler... i guess i just take that out and install the new duct ??? right ??
