Cooling Fans Running 24/7
 

Weird problem.. I go to get into my car this morning and the battery is dead. So i jump the battery and noticed the fans came on with the key out of the ignition. I got the car to start and as soon as it did start the fans turned off???? Turn care off... Fans run non stop. Ialso noticed my Turbo Timer wont turn off as well. ( greddy, the backlight on it just stays red ) so i disconnected the ground on it thinking the TT was bad... same problem.. Any ideas what would cause this? i checked the fuses and everything checked out. mods are in sig. please help beause pulling the cooling fan fuse everytime u shut off the car is teh sucks..

Also, the fans turn off as soon as i put the key in and switch it over to ACC/On.. Could the TT still be affecting the system even if the ground wire on it is removed? im going to remove the turbo timer later today, but right now its like 98% humdity and 95F outside.

Well, its not the Turbo timer.. i disconnected it.. same problem.. i also Reset ECU... 22 views.. no replys.. help me fella's.. could it be a bad thermosensor??

well im no guru on FD's (yet) but my guess is check out whatever gives the fan the signal to turn on, also check the wires running to the fan, see if they are chaffed, possibly shorting out, and giving the fan power when it shouldn't.

theres a short somewhere i think but it turns off when you put the key in is where you got me confused..

any electrical mod done recently? cause maybe that has to do with that..

I had the same problem about 3 months ago with my FD. Out of no-where this happen. I unplugged the little black box near the ECU (the factory "Fan mod" box) and now everything works as normal.

dont ask me why, I dunno.

Well with more troubleshooting done i now know i have an electrical problem somewhere.

whenever i take the key out i hear some clicking inthe enginebay. i popped the hood and found that the 4 little box's behind the front pasengerside headlight were clicking i narrowed it down to the lower 2 boxes. i think they are relays.. I then started wiggling wires looking for a lose connection and the clicking stopped then would come back. i pulled all the wires out and inspected the connectors.. all was well. i then found that when i imessed with the ground behind the UIM the clicking would return and the fans would come ona nd off. So im thinking that i have a major short somewhere.. and im no electrical expert so i think im going tohave to take it somewhere to get this looked at. From my inpsections i didnt find any breaks near the relays.... sighhh... 1 more thing to add to the never ending problems im having with this car... ^^

yeah, some wire is contacting metal somewhere cause if the fans turn on, obviously its completing a circuit..

i think it has something to do with the relays since you said it stops when you put the key in

its a weird ass problem.. at first we thought it was a bad relay.. but then when we move the wires a certain way you can hear and feel the relays click off..... Then we were like sweet.. we found the problem.. THEN we coudnt duplicate it anymore and we checked the grounds and found that when we moved the ground around it would start the relay clicking... onceagain... we couldnt duplicte the problem after that... for the hell of it im going to try to replace the relays.

The "four little boxes behind the front passenger headlight" are the fan relays that are part of the control function of your radiator fans. Grounding them in any way activates them (the clicking noise), which is why your fans are acting up. It sounds like your car has had the fan wiring update done; if the relays are not grounded in the proper sequence, the fans will work at odd times, or not at all. It sounds like you definitely have a worn or loose wire somewhere that is grounding one or several of the relays. You must do a wire trace on your wiring harness from the relays to find out where your ground fault is (replacing the relays won't work, IMO), otherwise you will be chasing your tail for days...

I remember FDOkinawa's FD did this for 3 or 4 months. Turned out that the one of the 4 fan relays had water inside of it and grounded out thus turning the fans on all the time.

this didnt start happening untill i was working on my car when it started raining balls like instantly.. i shut the hood but water still managed to get in.. Ill try replacing the relay's first. ( peice of mind ). i know i need to trace those wires. not looking forward to it..

I had a smilar problem and i had to eplace a faulty fan thermoswitch. (its a sensor neat the filler neck

if you got the engine bay wet try putting a dehumidifier near the fd with the bonnet open for the night that should dry things up then try again

im no pro but you never know what humid does to electronics.

Update: Problem fixed?!?! IT fixed itself... :shurg:
