Is it coolant seal caput?
I'm really pissed now, since I was planning on driving FD while I do some maintenance to my DD before winter. But I guess this is what they famous for. To do things like that with bad timing...
What I have: 1. Newly rebuilt engine with 4k miles 2. Almost stock car (bonez intercooler and PFC with stock map) 3. Always warmed up and cooled down properly 4. Changed oil yesterday Today I was driving to work and did some aggressive driving on a highway. Nothing major, just few redlines. I'm taking exit, looking into rearview mirror and see that I AM a smoke bomb. White smoke wall goes behind me. I quickly shutdown power, coasted to the stop and started to think. First idea was that yesterday I filled up and instead of adding premix before I added it after fill up. So, maybe oil wasn't distributed and it's got sucked in all together? I started car again, no problem just like usual but in few seconds there was so much smoke that I got afraid that people will get into accident behind me. So, what you say? No loss in power (I think). Lots of white smoke. Coolant seal? It's not a big deal for me to replace it, but I wonder WHY? and what should I do to stop it from happening second time? Thanks! |
More data.. Drove car to parking lot.
Buddy of mine diagnosed that it smells like oil. And coolant. So, there is both. There is no boost from primary. Starts fine. Exhaust dripping "milkshake" I see there is a leak near turbo actuator. Can I be "lucky" and it's just turbo? I think I see some white milkshake in oil cap though... |
Best way to find out is inspect the turbos. Remove the Y-pipe and look in side.
Do the champagne bubble test or pressure test your cooling system. |
Sure. Will flatbed it tonight and do some inspections after getting it on lift.
I hope it's turbo :) I should have a warranty on it. |
Checked coolant level on parking - looks good and clean.
Checked oil level - no oil. There is a puddle under turbo. So, turbo seal it is? |
Did you pressure test the system or do the champagne test?
Looking at the coolant level alone will not tell you squat... it is likely your turbo based on your description but the only part that concerns me is the fact that you have milky build up in your oil filler neck after just doing an oil change... That milky build up can be a result of a few things: coolant in your oil, moisture, or fuel dilution ( which I doubt u have since you just did an oil change ). |

Will check everything when I get her home on a lift. Right now it's all just 5 min observations by going to parking lot. I have fingers crossed. Since it was sudden and under load thing and I never had smoke problems I HOPE it's just a turbo. I had it rebuilt 2k miles ago, so it maybe the cause of the problem. Plus, I lost allmost all oil. |
Only had time to get car on a lift and visually check. Oil drips from where downpipe connects to turbos. First thing I will be removing Y-pipe and see what turbos look like.
When I do pressure check of cooling system, how many PSI's is safe? Something tells me my coolant seals is good though... |
Oil Control O-rings? How many miles on the motor?

4k miles on a motor. There was no signs of motor going bad. Again, it's not just smoking. This happened quick and it was not just smoking, it was doing smoke bomb like stuff.
I lost all oil in matter of 0.3 miles. Oil was dripping from exhaust (by by wideband) Here is pictures of primary turbo impeller and bolt. Turbo was rebuilt 2k miles ago. He is reputable guy, hopefully he will take care of it. Anybody has handly link on step by step for turbo removal? |
Took oil shower. Removed secondary turbo outlet. About 1/2 quart spilled on me.

Pulled turbos out. Huge mess. All in oil.
Exhaust side impeller shoot through downpipe and into catalytic. HIt O2 on a way. |
