coolant loss
 

ive read a 100 things on coolant loss and my problem seems to point to a internal seal failure which is common. but my real problem is this. every once in a while i go out to the car and the damn thing is plum full. i check it daily and this has been happening lately. i have a AST bypass but other than that its a bone stock FD with 108k on the motor. anyone have a clue what else could b my problem.

it expands when hot

Do you add coolant to it every so often? If not, then you may have some air in your coolant system (given that you also let it cool down fully). Burp your coolant system.

i had coolant loss a month or so and fixed it using..... what else, the resources here on the forum.

after reading it all i was prompted to go to Autozone and borrow ($75 security fee 100% returnable) their coolant pressure-izer. i run a Pettit AST which uses a cap that is compatible w the test instrument. in other words you pressurize the system by using the AST as the opening. i found i had 2 miniscule leaks around clamps and a tired cap on the AST (don't forget to test it).

if you have ANY LEAKS in the sytem you won't be able to pull a vacuum necessary to recover the coolant pushed into the overflow tank.

you will also be able to diagnose any engine problems.

do you think its a good idea to try it, if you have a plastic ast?

Coolant system tester is a MUST have tool for this car. No reason to pressurize over 13 lbs, which should be safe for the stock AST, though, really, WTH is that thing still doing on your car? :)
